This has been on my mind for awhile and I thought I'd throw this out there .. Why does Tulsa host the biggest midget race in the world every January but we do not have a track here that has midgets ? I mean,it wouldn't have to be a weekly show. Just a thought . Would there be enough interest ???

There was a USAC midget national race a few years ago at Creek the same weekend as one of the silver crown race in Tulsa. I think it got rained out though.

The Southern Midget Racing Series (SMRS) has had several good shows at Creek in the past....I think the most recent was about four or five years ago. They've usually run on the same night as the ASCS Sooner series. The racing was generally good and the crowd reaction was very positive, but the track just hasn't been interested in having them back. Same thing for Ada. The SMRS has really "grown up" in the past few years, and the purse has had to go up a bit, which doesn't exactly thrill promoters, of course. Minimum payout is $1000 to win and about $3500 total. The other problem has been most of the midgets are over in Missouri, Illinois, and that area. That's changing, with more support in the Tulsa area and guys like Matt Sherrell, Cody Brewer and Brady Bacon starting to make waves. As it is now, it's tough to get the guys from over to the east to come as far as central Oklahoma unless you can book two shows back to back, and that's not happening.
Historically, midget racing from the 70's forward hasn't drawn any crowds. The SWIMS tour had great talent and cars and drew about 600 fans in OKC. There was a non-sanctioned "Chili Bowl Preview" at Creek years ago, won by some kid named Tony Stewart, and it wasn't successful. The Chili Bowl has obviously opened some eyes to midget racing, but this is still sprint car and modified country.

very good post galen. My personal opinion is that 305's will be the future because drivers and promoters won't make the necessary adjustments to keep 360 sprints around. Of many other things .....the rules hurt a lot. Some aren't good, but yet at the best track in Oklahoma.........they aren't even enforced. I think the only thing that will save what we have now..........so that there is hope of openin up oppurtunities with midgets or ascs weekly shows.........is promoters and drivers gettin on the same page about the future.
