I am looking at making the trip up to watch the 100th Indy 500. Was wondering if there is any sprints racing in the area that weekend. Terre Haute is actually a potential spot for me to get a room and I was hoping they had something going but I cant seem to find anything. Anyone got any ideas please post. BTW I will coming from the southeast of Indy (from Arkansas) so any shows that side of the area would work out better.
Thanks

Little 500 in Anderson. It's a little ways from Indy but it's doable. Did it myself a couple years ago and it was great.

Monster Energy Sprint Car Series on Friday May 27 at Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown, Illinois (near Vandalia). If you are traveling through St. Louis, it would be right on your way.

IRP is roughly 8-10 miles from the big track, then u can go down to Georgetown after the races and enjoy the 500 party afterwards.... I parked in one of the neighborhood yards (paid roughly $20 for the night and race parking) slept in the car, and avoided the morning traffic. Got out pretty quick after the race (course I had a Indy local with me) and was back to the house in Brownsburg to see lap 20 of the 600.

my opinion...skip everything related to the indy 500 and go see any sprint car racing! you can always tune into espn after the 500 and find out where Danica crashed. They don't show real racing topics
do it in the dirt

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was kinda leaning towards the little 500 but thought it would be kinda cool to watch the USAC race at IRP. Anyone know if there are any hotels/motels close to the little 500? I guess if there were they are long booked now.

The Little 500 is a must see, at least once, if you ask me. 33 sprint cars lined up for a 3-wide start for 500 laps on a 1/4 high-banked track. Complete with pit stops, push trucks push starting cars off pit road, etc. It gets pretty sketchy. It's about 45 min to an hour drive northeast of the speedway, depending on your driving style. :D There are several hotels in and around Anderson, but most of the larger, well-known, chain places are on the north side off of I-69 at Scatterfield Rd. Just prepare yourself to pay a premium for rooms during the 500 weekend. They usually double, or even triple the rates that weekend, if there are still any available.

I had a pretty awesome 500 weekend in '08 -- and took my tour guide Andrew Quinn's advice (same as meatbag's) -- went to the Hulman Classic at Terre Haute on Thursday, Bloomington/Gas City Friday (Bloomington rained out, booked it to Gas City in time to catch the sprint A-main), Little 500 Saturday, and MSCS at Haubstadt Sunday.
I would agree with racinartist2 that the Little 500 is something every race fan should see at least once. It's pretty wild. I've also seen the Night Before the 500 once, and that is also pretty cool to see if you have never seen that -- midgets fly around that place. Having seen both once though, I would go to Lawrenceburg (1), Paragon (2), or Putnamville (3).
I can see where you might want to take in the 500 this year with it being the 100th, but if you would rather see awesome nonwing racing, Kokomo or Haubstadt on Sunday won't disappoint. The track surfaces at both places have been consistently the best in Indiana... so it's pretty easy to see why they are 1-2 in my book (and others).
Another cool thing about 500 weekend is that a lot of the race shops in the Indy/Brownsburg area have open houses the day before the 500. There were several drag racing teams that did it in '08, including John Force. I'm not much of a drag racing fan, but seeing an absolute first-class shop like his was pretty cool.
Hopefully it's a warm & dry weekend so you can enjoy whatever you decide to to!

100th 500 is still a few years off I believe.. They didn't run them during war years. 2011 is the 100th anniversary of the first 500. Slight difference.

You know I had kinda wondered about that. Figured they didnt have the race during WWII. I guess 100th Aniv. is just as cool as the 100th running. I went to 50th Daytona 500 and made my way up to WI for the 100th Harley Aniv a few years back. Just thought since I had wanted to mark this one off the bucket list this year would be a good year to go.
Went and looked it up and they didnt run in 1917-18 and again didnt run from 1942-45 due to the world wars.

Good call CarWash... although the actual 100th running of the 500 probably won't get the pub that this one will get.

Check to see if there might not be rooms available in private homes. I've taken advantage of such at Bristol and am sure there are similar arrangements in the Indianapolis area. The ones in Bristol are just about as pricy as the hotels; however, they're a lot more convenient. Given the size of metropolitan Indianapolis people looking for rooms for the race aren't the "captive audience" they are in Bristol.
I can remember back in the 1940s my grandparents who lived east of Indianapolis in the Greenfield area had "regulars" who traveled to Indianapolis for the race on motorcycles from the east coast. These folks stayed in spare rooms, went to the race, and headed home.
