What happened to Rutherford? He just disapeared from the point rankings? Did I miss a post about this? Just wondering?....

I heard he was fined, suspended, and lost all points because he had a bad tire. The tire was found after his heat race 2 weeks ago, they cut out a piece and sent it to the lab. I guess they came back and he was cheating after all. Funny how the guy who wins 4 out of the 5 first races is the only one caught... and the night he was caught he was still able to start on the front row.

They handled it exactly as the rulebook stated. $500 fine, loss of points and 1 race suspension. As to why he was able to continue racing the night the tire was seized, it's all about due process. He wasn't guilty of anything at that point, only strong suspicion. Once the results got back from the lab (which was Friday I believe), they sanctioned him.
What if they had removed him from the race that night and the tire had passed all the lab tests?
One ugly thing about Ventura is that they hold weekly races with the same people every week.. Weekly races turn into high school. Except it's like a high school where everyone is forced into a cliques and this group hates that group and vice versa. It is a very refreshing change to be a part of a traveling series where none of this baloney goes on. Every time I come back to Ventura I'm reminded of the high schoolness.

You might want to be sure of what you are saying. You are talking about a persons reputation and part of his livelyhood here I know for a fact that he did NOT cheat and has never been a cheater and will NEVER be CHEATER! First of all that tire in question was NOT taken from him. It was offered to the officals , after all it was a new way of testing and they had no baseline to go by.It was offered as a courtsey to hepl establish a baseline. WOULD ANY ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND DO SOMETHING TO A TIRE AND THEN OFFER IT UP TO AN OFFICAL. I THINK NOT!

So, they test 24 tires and 23 of them pass? Obviously he's doing something to make the device go off. They could have been using the 23 other cars as the base line and then one goes off clearly you know somethings a little fishy. It wouldn't be a big deal if it was an 18th place car but the guy had won 4 out of the first five races.

On the tire in question he finished 3 or 4 in his heat race. Why didn't he win if that tire was so good? Come on now.

He finished fourth but he also started last row inside. You can't expect a guy to win every time just because of the tire. Its pretty hard to pass Buckley and Kershaw after starting last in only a 10 lap race.

This is the post on Ventura's front page....interesting coincidence I think...
VRA has a rule in place that prohibits “TIRE” altering or treatment of any kind that alters the original manufacture’s tire compound. The rule also prohibits the removal of any manufacture’s identification markings.
Our technical staff has obtained a device that will read (sniff) air released from a tire. A random sampling of air from tires is being conducted to establish a benchmark reading by the sniffer. During our information only sampling, there was a tire that did exhibit a reading different than the other tires .We determined this tire should be sent to an independent test lab for analysis. The results of the tests are currently under review by an independent third party expert that will provide us the necessary information to determine what the differences are. Once we have all of the accurate information we will determine what actions will be taken. It is our goal to gather all the facts in this situation so we can be absolutely certain we are establishing enforceable standards and benchmarks.
We would ask that all those concerned to be patient during this process as it is very complicated and the accuracy is paramount to any decisions we make.

What if the air is nitrogen? Would that be considered illegal?

My understanding is that the sniffer Ventura uses is measuring VOC's (Volitile Organic Chemicals). All of the tire softeners/conditioners that I'm aware of are petroleum based solvents. Petroleum solvents emit lots o smelly VOCs. Note that not all conditioners change the hardness of the tire (i.e. a durometer of a treated tire may show the same hardness as an untreated tired) which makes detection more difficult and introducing a VOC sniffer adds another tool in detection. As nitrogen (not NOX) is relatively inert, I would imagine that it is a pretty low VOC emitter.
BTW - Normally when a race results show a single leader start to finish, I think yawner. I think the fans got their money's worth on last weekend's race.
