Brian Leppo was in the right place at the right time to score his first sprint-car win of the season at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night.
Leppo was running second when leader Greg Hodnett developed a flat left rear tire and had to pit with only two laps left in the 25-lap main event.
Leppo, of New Oxford, would lead the final two circuits to score the $3,600 win in a car owned by Floyd Swope.
“Greg was going to be hard to beat when he’s out there in clean air because he is so good,” Leppo said. “To run them down is one thing, but to pass them, it was a tough track. We jumped to the front and tried to hold our own. I’m proud of my guys. This is a brand new Mach 1 (Chassis) that Mark Smith built for us and Rob Cappetta does the motors. My guys work really hard.”
Hodnett, of Thomasville, started second and drove into the lead over polesitter Derek Sell. Leppo shot from sixth to third on the first lap.
Sell got high in turn three and touched the wall on lap eight and Leppo drove into second. Hodnett was passing slower cars and Leppo caught him on lap 11. He looked under him in turn three, but Hodnett pulled ahead and then began to increase his lead.
Lance Dewease used a third turn slider to get by Sell and into third.
Brian Montieth, who started 12th and Brent Marks passed Sell and began a battle for fourth. Montieth tried a slider in turn two, but Marks got back by. He tried again in turn four, but Marks once again drove ahead.
Montieth tried the top in turn one and jumped Marks’ right rear tire and hit the wall. Montieth’s stopped sprinter brought out the first caution flag on lap 15. Marks continued in fourth.
Steve Buckwalter, who started 11th, drove into the top five on the restart as Hodnett and Leppo pulled away from Dewease.
Tire problems emerged on lap 23 for leader Hodnett and fourth place Marks. The caution flew as both cars slowed with left rear flats. This handed the lead to Leppo with Dewease and Buckwalter following.
Buckwalter drove by Dewease on the bottom in turn one to take second on the restart, but didn’t have enough time to catch Leppo.
“Last year, we were off and I kind of got down, but I’m pretty pumped up for this year,” Leppo said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Danny Dietrich passed Dewease on the final lap to take third. Dewease and Chad Layton completed the top five. Tyler Walker, Doug Esh, Adam Wilt, Fred Rahmer and Sell completed the top 10.
Sell, Hodnett and Gerard McIntyre Jr. won the 10-lap heat races for the 27-car field. Cory Haas won the consolation.
