Calvin Landis Wins at USA Raceway
Whether it be flying from Knoxville, Iowa, or flying around the track at USA Raceway, Calvin Landis had his pilot's license in his pocket. With warm temperatures and a racy track, it was a great night to watch a sprint car race. In the Gary Williams owned #79 Diamond Mechanical/Bandit Racing sprint car, Calvin drove the Borello powered, Maxim chassis car to the checkered flag in impressive style. While notching his very first win with the ASCS Southwest Region, he brought his total sprint car career wins to 45.
Heat 1 saw Calvin starting outside row 3. With a 3 car wide track, he came home in 3rd place behind John VanHorn and Rick Ziehl. "The track was good and you could pass on the top and the bottom", said Landis. "The car was a little tight, but this Borello motor ran real well for us. I felt we were the fastest car on the track."
In the 25 lap Sunoco Fuel ASCS Southwest Region A main event, Calvin would start in the 5th starting position. In a fast paced race with lots of passing, Calvin worked through the traffic with mastery. By the 14th lap, he had lapped up to the 7th place car and worked his way into first place, only to restart 2nd behind 3 time defending ASCS SW Region champion, Rick Ziehl, when the 2nd yellow flag of the race was thrown. By lap 20, Calvin was back in the lead and won by a full straightaway. In victory lane, a very excited Landis thanked his car owners, Gary and Tracy Williams, and his crew members Cal, Jim, Dave, Steve, Randy, Bill, Mark, Drew, and Colton for all their hard work to bring home the win. He also thanked the Diamond Mechanical/Bandit Racing Team, M & J Trophys, Hoosier Tire, Weld Wheels, UltraShield Race Products, Valley Industrial Painting and Powder Coating, Mark's Nuts & Bolts, Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water, Pro Shocks, and Schoenfeld Headers for their sponsorship. "This was a great win for our team. I threaded the needle through lapped traffic like the Knoxville guys do," quipped Landis, referring to his years racing at the famed Knoxville Raceway.
The next race will be held April 23, 2011, at USA Raceway in Tuscon, AZ. See ya there!
