Darlington, SC…….J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz., driving for A.J. Foyt Enterprises, recorded the fastest practice lap during today’s practice sessions for the USAC K & N Silver Crown Series at Darlington Raceway. Yeley clocked a lap in the Greer Special C & R Chevy at 162.732 mph as 14 cars took practice laps around the 1.366-mile oval. Qualifying is scheduled at 5:30. Tonight’s 50-lap race starts at 8 pm. Yeley is piloting the car driven to victory by Tracy Hines at Homestead, Fla. March 23 and by Bobby East at Iowa Speedway May 5.
“This car is like the C.O.T. of USAC,” said Yeley. “It’s fun to drive and this track is one of my favorites. Actually, I probably would have run more than 165 if I hadn’t slipped in turn two and almost hit the outside wall. The track should get faster later in the shadows but it’s still going to be hard on tires. This is probably going to be harder than I’ll drive anytime in the next three months. Three laps here in these cars is like 200 laps in a Busch car.”
The recorded best speeds during the two practice sessions were as follows: Yeley-162.732; Jerry Coons Jr.-159.792; Cameron Dodson-159.502; Mat Neely-158.878; Brian Tyler-158.596; Mike Murgoitio-158.423; Aaron Pierce-158.056; Wayne Reutimann Jr.-157.924; Bud Kaseding-156.194; A.J. Fike-155.301; Pablo Donoso-154.846; Tim Barber-152.583; Ryan Moore-149.699 and Paul White-147.300.
