I'm planning on running a non-wing 305 on a medium banked track roughly 5/16 mile. To my understanding the longer the track the longer the wheelbase. I realize there are more variables than that but I just wanted to get some feedback. I know a lot of guys run an 86" car on the short tracks but I've been looking for an 87". I believe it was the Hoseheads classifieds someone is selling an ex-Daryn Pittman car ran at Knoxville that's an 86/40 which pretty much kills my theroy. I'm sure a lot of it is driver preference but being a non-wing car I figured an 87" would be better. I've found an 88" car I really like but I am worried about that long of a car on a small track. Thanks

I was hoping that someone "in the know" would respond to this post. I too, am interested in learning more about the advantages or disadvantages of a longer wheel base.
I know that a longer wheel base is supposed to react a little slower, but does pushing the front wheels further forward help load the rear?
What other advantages or disadvantages are there?

I know of some people who like the 88 inch car on all tracks, and then again I have run an 86 for many years on half miles. It just depends on preferences I guess. In theory, the 86 should be better on the quarter mile, on the half mile, it might be a bit twitchy entering the corner. I am trying out an 87 inch car this year, so I will let you know what I think of the differences.

If you plan on running 305's on small tracks a 86" would be the best. Your lower HP isn't going to get you in trouble. 87" wouldn't hurt you too much. I know of quite a few people that have ran 87" cars and just shortened up the front axle getting it back as far as they can (primarily due to crashing their 86 and having to run a 87.) Most of the 88/41 cars are used for big HP 410's. If you drop a 900 horse 410 into a 86/39 it's most likely going to dance the front end all night and be pointing to the sky!
Here is a scenario that might help best fit your question. Why is a top fuel dragster so long? The longer the wheel base the harder it is to get the front wheels off the ground. If you smash the throttle with a 5000 HP engine on a 50" wheelbase car it is going to flip over like nothing! Smash the throttle on a 200" wheelbase with 5000HP and it is harder to get up therefore you have better front end touch and feel. This is why dragsters run the 1/4 mile and don't worry about having to turn quickly and come back the other way! Shorter wheelbase cars will get thru the corner a lot better.
You could even use karts as an example. Look at a picture of a go kart from 20 years ago compared to the ones they race nowadays. The wheelbase is really short cuz corner speed is a must.
