There is news going around today that National Speed Sport News has printed their last issue. They have been a staple in racing news for like the last 8 decades. Sad day!

Boy I hope that isn't true. I know we live in a new world with the internet, smart phones, text meassages, twitter and i pods, etc. But to me there is nothing like sitting in my easy chair and reading an issue of NSSN, Area Auto and Flat Out when they arrive. I guess I am just old school. It's sad day if true!!!!!!

I read Dave Argabright's column on the NSSN website confirming this. Very sad day indeed.

Well why don't we all find a way to show our support. Maybe we can make a difference. None of us want to see NSSN go away. It's the heart of racing news!

'The times...they are a changin' ..... indeed it is the end of an era. I grew up reading NSSN and it is a icon of Americana .... NSSN will soon be joined by many ...many ..other newsprint tabloids and magazines.

Not fair ??? you betcha ... but it is economics ...plain and simple no offense to the internet ...but it spelled the doom of dated print news.

But Western Union put the Pony Express outta business too ...and some day ... as the artist formerly known as Prince predicted last year (a few decades too early)...'the INTERNET is over' ..or it will be over too ..replaced by something I can't imagine.

Maybe if enough people speak out it can be saved. "Baseball Who's Who" shut down for a year, & I guess enough people bitched, now its in every convenience store.

I'm so sad, this is something I look forward to each week, reading the National Speed Sport News. We might check the race results online but when I can sit in my easy chair with a cup of coffee or a cold beer and read the full details of each and every race it seems more real. Will miss this more than words can say.

I feel like I've lost a close friend.

I've subscribed to NSSN for close to 40 years. When I was a child and couldn't afford the paper, I would search under the grandstands following the races at Huset's Speedway for discarded copies of the paper that were sold there. I couldn't wait to get home and pour over the paper, marveling at the photos of the different types of race cars from around the country and dreaming of the day that I would be able to travel and visit the fascinating tracks that I read about.

I'm very proud to have been a small contributor to NSSN, submitting local racing reports to the paper for a number of years.

While it's true that in recent years the race reports it published were "old" news due to today's technology, I looked forward each week to reading the musings of its excellent columnists, who offered insights into the racing world that would not have been told otherwise. And especially the editor's column by Chris E, who always seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the national auto racing scene.

Good-bye, my friend.

I quit taking it years ago, may have been the post office's fault but mine always took a week or more to get there. I realize PO doesn't have to deliver bulk mail on any schedule, might have been worth it to NSSN to upgrade the way they sent it. Heck, if I got it the same week as the races they reported on I'd have kept taking it. I enjoyed the columns and the stories, I don't spend as long searching the web for info as I did reading NSSN but it just took too bleeping long to get here.

Considering it probably cost twice as much to mail NSSN as it did to print it, it's a wonder it didn't go out sooner. Then, there's the lack of service the USPS seems to exemplify, as doublenuthin just talked about. Magazines and newspapers have to adapt (websites, pdf's, email, etc) if they are going to survive. Sad, but that's the world we live in now and it's not all bad.

I guess the "cloud's silver lining" is the next to last paragraph of the announcement on their .com portal ...

"

NationalSpeedSportNews.com, the online version of the newspaper, will continue to be updated with daily news, giving Internet savvy readers the opportunity to keep up with some of the same news they enjoyed every week.

But as far as the newspaper goes, it’s the end of an era.

"

Still very, very sad to see racing's premiere print rag's demise....

Since the days of my husband's early years attending Olympic Stadium with his Dad every Sunday night, the first business of the evening , even before buying a hotdog and a coke, was to follow his Dad's instructions:"Buddy,go down and get us a Bergen Herald"which is what the newspaper was called back then.

So burying the National Speed Sport News is the final tribute to a happier time when everything was great especially as viewed through the eyes of a little boy. This newspaper was probably the main reason that Bud wanted to learn to read on his own.His sister never cared for racing and Bud was quick to take advantage of that by telling her "It's just for us boys,Eileen".I'm so glad that he didn't follow that maxim when we got married as racing became our major interest after our family and buying a "Speed Sport"every week at the track became our favorite thing to do.

Here we are 60 years later and the news that we will no longer have our racing"fix" every week is heartbreaking. We enjoy having a computer and the ability to stay on top of the racing news is so important but as previously stated by Dave Argabright : NOTHING TAKES THE PLACE OF HOLDING THAT PRINTED NEWSPRINT IN OUR HANDS !

What a beautiful time ! We owe the Economaki family a special thanks for keeping the dream alive.

"Get'cher National Speed Sport News.......OOOnly a Quarter!!"

That chant was heard all night long at Knoxville in my younger years, as the fella would peddle his papers through the parking lot and grandstands.

NSSN has been a family tradition in my house since the '60s. First it was my dads subscription, then mine, and for the past few years, in my sons name. 3 generations.

What a shame. However, not all that surprising, for many reasons. I agree with others, USPS hasn't done them any favors either.

The ones I feel sorriest for are the ones like my dad, in his mid-70s, the one that gave me his "racin' bug", who still wait eagerly for the mailman to bring him his "speed sport", has no clue how to run a computer and has no interest in learning.

Very sad indeed.

OBTW.....What becomes of the subscription we just renewed at the first of the year?

Out of curiosity, what was the cost of a yearly subscription in 2011?

As I sit here today partially Hand Lettering a Sprint Car (tail tank) for this coming season, I realised I too was a part of the problem. Technology is replacing Craftsmanship with all the ugly computer generated cars across the country, the true Craftsman has no where to turn.

We are an endangered species. Sign Painters, News Print people, the list goes on and on.

As far as pre-paid subscribtions, if more people had subscribed, they most likley would not be in this position to start with. Many of you may feel that you sent monies for an ill willed subscribtion. Hey this was not a Company that just started up and took your money.

They have overhead and salaries to pay. In my opinion, they did all they could do to stay in business, so for some to say they took the money and ran is absurd. You don't stay in Business for 77 years with those tactics.

So next time you Google a race on your cell phone, stop for a minute and look at how many jobs you have taken away, and the History that we have lost.

Allen Crawford, Oklahoma City, Ok.

RIP National Speed Sport News. I always looked forward to reading the latest in it's pages. Delivery was uneven to be kind. It would come anytime from the Thursday after printing to a week or more late. Sometimes two issues came together. Still a better bargain at $57 a year, I think that's about what I last paid, than the internet at $50 a month. Allan Unruh
