the kansas antique racer's banquet sat.mar 12, was a huge success thanks to bill johnson who organised the event. bill owns the # 98 super which is a fine restored racer. along with the help of larry greider owner of auto Master `who let the old racer's use his building. . the food was excellent ,and a ton of door prises were given out to many lucky winner's. and a fun filled auction with master of ceremonies bryson mills taking bids on many race related items. three OLD racer's participated in a multiple choice quiz to win a brand new one of a kind short block, with the winner donating his win back to the k.a.r. also racer's who have left us in 2010 were remembered. there was live music provided by troy pulver's band... last year a collection was taken up to purchase a memorial brick to be installed at the n.a.s.c.a.r hall of fame museum for jim roper of halstead kansas who was the winner of the 1 s/t n.a.s.c.a.r race in 1949 at charolotte n.c. the brick is 8x8 in. and will be placed in the plaza this fall.

One of the great things about the KAR banquet is who attends. Among those attending last year were Harold Leep and Larry Dewell. This year, it was thought Speedy Bill Smith and his child bride might attend, but they are dealing with serious health issues and had to cancel. Please keep these racing icons in your prayers. Grady Wade called Bryson Mills from Florida to send his best wishes. And a real treat was having Jelly Wilhelm spend the evening with us. Making almost every banquet are Dave Ross and Jack Petty and this year was no exception. There may have been other legends present that I missed. A couple of news bits were that the beautiful black and gold super of Jim Harkness, from the stable of Fred Stewart and Max Estes, may find a permanent home in a community museum in Ness City, complements of members of the Harkness family. Also, efforts are underway to have another vintage nationals on the High Banks of Belleville in 2012. Because of the great response from the first nationals, people associated with the track and the high banks museum are involved with planning this event. As a footnote, body shops sure aren't what they used to be. The Automasters facility
is amazing. You would have to see it to believe it. Who would have thought a high dollar frame fixture would make a great bar?
