Another question from a FNG: Whats up with WoO points system? I was looking at last years results, and Sammy Swindell finished 16th with 4 wins, 18 Top 5s & 30 Top 10s. Ben Gregg & Toni Luter finished ahead of him with zero wins & zero Top5s between them, and a grand total of 1 Top 10 each.... huh???!!!???
Do they give bonus points for showing up at every race, or penalize for not doing so? Seems crazy.....

Well, you do usually get points in each race you race in, and seeings as they made every race and Sammy definitely didn't... I think that's your answer right there.

sammy didn't run the entire outlaw series.
that means he didn't run as many races that paid points. even if you make the main and finish last you get points. you are guaranteed a minimum amount of points per race when you show up.

Makes sense if the goal is to have enough cars for each race, or to keep "also-rans" from getting discouraged; but IMHO if a guy shows up for 10 races & wins them all he deserves more points than someone who shows up for every race but doesn't really compete.
Maybe they should just pay cash for everyone who shows up & qualifies, leave the points for competitors? Just my ign'unt 2 cents....

Last year both Ben Gregg and Toni Lutar were running for ROY which at the end pays 25,000. So if i were them id rather not lose out on a points system because im not winning every night. They also get cash on top of their finishing pay for being loyal to the WOO... tow money.

i get the impression you don't understand the concept of gaining more points by participating in more events.
it is called a SEASON points race. it is not a new thing.
everyone who shows up IS a competitor. some people have more success at it than others.
why should someone who just shows up every now and then be treated better than someone who supports and participates in the series 100%?
you say leave the points for "competitors". just who would you call competitors and how would you give them points? how do you know at the beginning of the year who is going to run just a few races and win them and who is going to run the whole season and and not do as well finish wise? do you wait till the end of the year and go back and say "well this guy won a lot so we are going to give him a bunch of points and this guy was here every race but didn't do as well so we are going to give him no points"? or do you come up with a system that gives you points based on your finish at each event you enter?

Guess it is a good thing your not in charge of any series then... not that the series would be around very long if you were..

Hey, like I said, I'm a new guy; not claiming to know how to run a series! I was just saying to base points on finishes rather than showing up... no big deal
"or do you come up with a system that gives you points based on your finish at each event you enter?"
thats what I was saying

finish position points are awarded as is show up points, quick time points, so NOT showing up for a race puts you behind the eight ball. points are about PARTICIPATION

The reason tracks and series do a points championship is, like prettywoman said, to keep drivers coming. Otherwise they would do exactly as Slammin' Sammy did, show up on the nights where he knows he has a good chance at winning.
If you were the owner/promoter of the WoO or a Track interested in booking the WoO, would you rather risk only having 5-10 guys that still run the series but aren't any big names, or book it with confidence knowing that you will have 15-20 guys including the big names that are there because their running for points?

they do base points on finishes at each event. the higher you finish, the more points you get. still, you have to be at the events to finish.....right? so if you run 10 events out of 60 and win them all and it pays 50 points to win you get 500 points for the year. if you run all 60 events and average 20 points each event you end up with 1200 points. so there you go, a system that gives you points based on your finish at each event you enter.
just like you agreed above.
so what is the problem?

finish position points and show up points are not really the same thing. finish position points are what you earn on the track. i think the woo guarantees you will earn at least 75 points for the event if you show up and unload your car. i don't believe you get 75 points plus what you earn on the track. i believe you are just guaranteed to get at least 75 points no matter what happens. if you earn more than 75 points on the track, your total will be the points you earned. i could be wrong, but that is the way i have understood how the outlaws do it.
my local track does give "show up" points. meaning you get a certain number of points just for participating and those points are added to the total points you earn on the track.
i do agree, the more you participate, the more opportunity you have to earn points.
