NWWT set for three events at Sunset
VANCOUVER, Wash. - The IXL Metal Conditioner NorthWest Wingless Tour is signed up for three events at Sunset Speedway in Banks, Ore. for the upcoming 2011 racing season, with the first coming in July.
The Pacific Northwest's premier non-wing 360 sprint car tour made its debut at the northwest Oregon facility last summer with former sprint car champion Tony Thomas taking the checkered flag in the main event on the small 1/4-mile red clay bullring. That event was a very late addition, being announced just weeks before, but it led to an agreement for multiple events for 2011.
The NWWT was originally slated to make its first 2011 appearance on June 18th, but special scheduling changes were made at Sunset Speedway and the IXL Metal Conditioner NorthWest Wingless Tour agreed to move its event to Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. The NWWT will now make its first 2011 appearance on Saturday, July 9th. The NWWT will return for events on August 13th and September 10th.
Sunset Speedway, which is co-owned by Jerry Schram and NASCAR star Greg Biffle, has long been a host to a handful of sprint car races each season. With many of the NWWT teams based in close proximity to Portland, this give them three events relatively close to home as the track is located only about 25 miles west from Portland's downtown.
The IXL Metal Conditioner NorthWest Wingless Tour is entering its third season of competition, with 17 events scheduled at six different dirt tracks in Oregon and Washington. The NWWT is holding a general meeting this Saturday at 1 p.m., held at Competition Motorsports at 2242 Williams Ave. in Portland. All drivers and car owners intending to race with the NorthWest Wingless Tour this season are strongly encouraged to attend.
