2011 brings a first for the Oregon Double Shot Series traditional sprint cars run as they will run with wings on for 3 races and have 13 races in the non wing traditional topless fashion.
Founded 9 years ago and standing as the Northwest oldest and longest standing non wing group, the Oregon Double Shot Series (ODSS) originally ran with wings on but switched to the traditional non-wing configuration in approximately 2002.
In an effort to promote traditional non wing open wheel cars, sprint car guru Mike McCann formed a group of midget racers which ran under the Northern Outlaw Midget Association name or NOMA until this year. Combining NOMA with his United Sprint Car Association Mike saw the opportunity to present a combined class of midgets and sprint cars for the fans to enjoy and re-named them the Oregon Double Shot Series. The former group ran under the Inter Mountain Sprint Car Series headline. McCann is the sole responsible person that resurrected single handedly, non wing sprint cars and midgets in this region. His vision was to bring back to life a long missing part of motorsports history in the Northwest.
2011 the NOMA group has been combined with the Washington Midget Association Dirt series in an effort to promote higher car counts to help enhance the excitement of open wheel dirt midgets. The ODSS looks forward to and will share several event dates with the WMRA series this coming season.
The season ahead finds the ODSS running 3 traditional non wing events at Grays Harbor Raceway Park. Located in Elma Washington and approximately 20 miles due west of Olympia the Grays Harbor facilities are second to none. Elma is a 3/8 mile high speed track that is very well groomed and has a huge fan base that supports the track from all over the Northwest.
Continuing into 2011 the ODSS will find itself running 7 race dates at Cottage Grove Speedway located in Cottage Grove Oregon. Cottage Grove has a long history of Sprint Car racing and is a fan favorite destination for everyone looking for the fast paced action that takes place on the high bank 1/4 mile track.
Central Oregon’s Madras Speedway rounds out the ODSS schedule in 2011 with 6 race dates. Three (3) of those dates will be traditional non-wing race dates and three (3) will be wing races. The 3 races at Madras will have a separate points system from the non wing races with trophies awarded to the top 3 member winners in the class at the ODSS banquet at the end of the season.
