I will get my 6 week R&R from Afghanistan in May. I will be visiting Northern California and I want to shoot/see some races in the area. Preferably nonwing, but I am open to all. I am looking to make the trip in the last week of May or early June and my travel plans will be flexible. My buddy Steve Lafond has already come up with some suggestions, but I am always looking for more. Thanks!

Head east for non wing action in that time frame. USAC eastern swing in early June, followed closely by Indiana midget week where non wing sprintcars are the support class every night..........

Patiently waiting for Eckert to get his database up and going again. I use it to make all my sprint car and midget racing plans with.

You should just follow the speedweek from chico to oregon to skagit and watch dirt cup. Yes its wings but quite a few nights within a short time frame. Plus youll get to see more tracks too. Thats like the 2nd week of june.

The Western Speedweek is a good choice and dont forget the dirt cup at Skagit is $40k to win this year so it should bring a strong car count.

You also have the traditional memorial day weekend at Calistoga with King of the west but once again winged.

here's the schedule for the non-wing 410's out here in Cali. I would recommend the Watsonville and Santa Maria race since you are going to be in Nor-Cal. Santa Maria is a excellent non-wing track and Watsonville is right in your neighborhood. Big plus is there back to back. Anyways hope this helps. 2011 AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car Schedule: Date – Location/Track
3/12 – Perris, CA/Perris Auto Speedway
4/2 – Perris, CA/Perris Auto Speedway
April 16 - TBA
5/7 – Hanford, CA/Giant Speedway
5/28 – Perris, CA/Perris Auto Speedway
5/29 – Victorville, CA (T)/Victorville Auto Raceway
June 4 - TBA
6/17 – Watsonville, CA/Ocean Speedway
6/18 – Santa Maria, CA/Santa Maria Speedway
7/2 – Perris, CA/Perris Auto Speedway
July 23 - TBA
7/30 – Perris, CA/Perris Auto Speedway
8/13 – Santa Maria, CA/Santa Maria Speedway
8/20 – Perris, CA/Perris Auto Speedway
9/3 – Calistoga, CA/Calistoga Speedway
9/4 – Calistoga, CA/Calistoga Speedway
9/8 – Chico, CA/Silver Dollar Speedway
9/24 – Perris, CA/Perris Auto Speedway
10/8 – Perris, CA/Perris Auto Speedway

With the dates of late May/early April, here are your options for Wing racing in NorCal.... not much non-wing in this area.

May 28 Calistoga Speedway, Calistoga, CA - KWS Race 9
May 29 Calistoga Speedway, Calistoga, CA - KWS Race 10
June 4 Giant Chevrolet Speedway, Hanford, CA - KWS Race 11
June 10 Silver Dollar Speedway, Chico, CA - KWS Race 12
June 11 Southern Oregon Speedway, Medford, OR - KWS Race 13
June 13 Cottage Grove Speedway, Cottage Grove, OR - KWS Race 14
June 16-18 Skagit Speedway, Alger, WA (Non-point event)

Yes Sir it does, it is still incomplete as these 72 hour weeks make updates to the calendar tough to find all the time I need for it, but it will be complete soon. So, to answer your question, I can find the races in CA there (or anywhere else), but the Open Wheel Race Calendar doesn't tell a foreigner like myself where I can find the BEST race for that particular day!

I want to thank everyone for the replies and suggestions. At this point in time, the Calistoga races on the 28th and 29th are looking like the likely candidates, as I want to be back home by the next weekend so I can possibly hit the WoO double header in Knoxville....Thanks again everyone!

And if Knoxville rains out, Eagle is running a 2 day ASCS National show.

Calistoga event is great. We always make it a priority to make that KWS event and to the Louie Vermeil Classic labor day weekend.

I too prefer non-wing action

Thanks Mr. Mac, but I must tell you that I am merely a lowlife contractor working on Project Liberty supporting the USAF, not an enlisted member of the armed services "serving my country". You see, I have to post this, because Ted Hartman, car owner and crew chief extraordinaire up in Puyallup, WA has claimed on another message board that I go around, touting my "service to my country", and don't make an attempt to dispel that I am merely a contractor so I can bask in the glory of the work that the service members have done. He threw this thread in my face because I did not answer your post and let the world know that I am not a service member, the truth is, I haven't revisited this thread since over a week ago. Ted's claim is that that I am leeching off the work of our troops and that I'm not contributing to "the cause" over here and that I am only here to draw a large paycheck (which I am). Yes, the money is the first and foremost reason for being here. Why else would an unarmed civilian spend 3 to 4 months away from his family at a time, while enduring rocket attacks, eating shitty food, living in an 8' x 8' "room" and working 12 hours a day? Yeah, I draw a nice check for my efforts, but in the process, the "project" that I work on is responsible for killing or capturing over 1500 high profile bad guys in the past year. If I am not doing something other than "getting a check", I wonder then why I had one of the coolest days of my life today when I got to shake the hands of General Briggs (a 2 star), two One Star Generals and three "Full Birds" when they came to our "operation" and congratulated ALL of us lowlife contractors on the "great job" we are doing? So there ya have it Teddy, I hope I have dispelled the implication that I am actually doing something for my country. I guess I will have to do like you and put an "I support the troops" bumper sticker on my truck when I get home, then and only then will I be "doing something for my country". Are you happy now?

contractors are often at greater risk in these sh!tholes around the world because of the"rules of engagement" that he jackasses in Wash DC put on the guys who are permitted to carry a weapon...sometimes not permitted to be fully loaded.

Unusual twist to a racing thread. I salute my fellow soldiers in a war zone. I also acknowledge those who share in the cause without the recognition of a uniformed soldier. In Vietnam, where I had first hand experience with contractors, we had a saying: "Same mud, Same blood". There were far fewer contractors from the USA in my war, but times have changed. Because of the greedy people hanging around Washington DC, they have created more and more contractor positions. Those folks are the real ones to blame, not a contractor for filling a slot. So, Ted, relax. Getting on Hawker's case may not be the right thing to do. He is not in a penthouse. JMO.

HEY HEY HEY HEY! I take exception to that car owner/crew chief extraordinaire tag.

Everyone that cares to know me knows how hard I work at avoiding being both of those things. Smile

I too thank the men and woman serving my country, and the contractors and their employees as well. Well, everyone but Pat. You never know if he's really there or not - like the last time he was holed up in his mancave in Missouri telling all of you how close the last rocket came to hitting his unit. Keep your head down Pat, and send us some results from the RC car races. Take care.

I'm plenty relaxed Larry. I simply asked him if he was really there this time, and wondered why he allows people to thank him for his service to the country, when by his own admission, he's only there for the money.

This thing goes way back for Patrick and myself, and when cornered in his discrepancies, he gets all huffy and likes to go off topic and attack the race program my son initiates. He has a problem staying on track to the subject, and when all else fails, plays the victim very well. Not an opinion - a fact.

Gee Ted, didn't you initiate the recent attack on the other message board, questioning my being in Afghanistan to begin with? Then when I respond, you tried to go all out to trample my character? I was here last time, and I am here this time, so what's your problem? I'm not "huffy" as you say, but I will not stop in the defense of my character against someone who has never met me. When you go personal, I do too, then you cry afoul. Sometimes, if you want to play the message board pissing match, as you do, you might get your feelings hurt. I only speak when spoken to, just like the thread you hijacked on the other message board, so be careful of what you start.
