Question from a newbie: could someone explain "provisionals" to me? Do different tracks & sanctioning bodies have different provisionals? How are they earned?, etc.

Here at Williams Grove With the WoO It's usualy the top 2 drivers in points From the WoO then The top 2Highest Local Drivers From Williams Grove in Points that don't make the feature. Other than then the Grove does not hand out provisionals.

ASCS provisional rules: National drivers that have run 80% of the National events are eligible for a provisional. A maximum of three provisionals per year will be allowed (excluding Knoxville Nationals and the Short Track Nationals). The driver highest in points, not making the show, has first choice at a provisonal and then the second and on down. No more than two provisionals will be allowed per night. 1st provisional you will receive money, and full points. 2nd provisional you will receive money and finishing points that do not exceed a 10th place finish. 3rd provisional you will receive money and finishing points that do not exceed 20th place finish. Any promoter will be allowed to add any two (2) cars that they wish. Provisional rules apply to national races only.

So can a provisional bump a car that's qualified on the track, or are they just put in back of the pack?

They add them to the rear, so when the WoO run at any 410 weekly track they can have up 28 cars start the A-Feature. 2 local provisionals, and 2 WoO travelers provisionals.

No they just tag the rear. So instead of 24 starters they have 28.

Thats good. Bumping would be really unfair.
I can see why some people don't like it, but on the other hand if some guy & his kid drive 300 miles to see Kinser or somebody & they don't qualify, that would suck too, so its good for the fans.

That is correct - up to 28 can start depending on the series. Provisionals have been around for ages in one form or another ... back in the olden dayz they were called "Promoter's Options". These days teams are "entitled" to a set number per season. I don't see anything wrong with them from a fan's standpoint - if you pay to see a race with your favorite racer in it, and due to any number of reasons (bad luck, mechanical etc.) he doesn't make the A main - you still get to see him start in the back and try to salvage a decent finish. It's usually the fan whose least favorite driver makes the A thru a provisional that gets pissed... and/or the team that gets beaten by a provisional starter. Although from a team's standpoint - the shoe may be on the other foot sometime during the season - so it usually evens out during the year.

if you want to learn about provisionals in person- attend a WoO race at Williams Grove...most every race starts 28 cars as locals are only given an opportunity to use a provisional IF a WoO team is using one for the night.
outlaws save provisionals for these events and the schedule used to be set up so that the WoO would replenish provisionals just at the right time each year to keep the hopes and dreams alive for the travelers.

IMO if you're not fast enough to make it through the heats or b-main then you don't deserve a spot in the a-main.
Load it up and try again the next night................

Hypothetical situation (and worst case scenario) here ....
You've waited all year to see the WoO make their once a year visit to a track anywhere remotely within driving distance. Steve and Sammy both blow motors/cut a tire in their respective heats. They reload and both blow another motor in the B -- or tangle with a backmarker while lapping him. Or the same thing happens to the local track hero/champion or your son's/daughter's favorite driver. Now you don't get to see them in the A? And you would be OK with that?
