Jonathan Allard finishes fourth at Ocean Speedway

By Gary Thomas

Watsonville, CA - May 7, 2007...Jonathan Allard and Williams Motorsports scored another top five finish with the Golden State Challenge Series Saturday night at the Ocean Speedway during the 10th round of competition for the traveling series. An engine problem, however, forced the team to swap cars for Ocean Speedway and go back to the older Maxim that was utilized in Chico a few weeks back. Jonathan fought the car during the 30 lapper which was run on very dry and tough surface, but he was able to bring the car home in the top five for the third consecutive race with the Golden State Challenge Series.

Very strong winds during the day on Saturday greeted teams to the Ocean Speedway and it took its toll on the 1/4 mile bullring. Jonathan came out fifth in the qualifying order and ripped off a 12.472 which placed the Williams Motorsports, GT Trends, K & N Filters, Weld Racing No. 0 second quick. He lined up sixth in the second heat race and moved his way up to a second place finish to put the Red Line Oil, Graph X Designs, Chris Jones Racing, BR Motorsports, Maxim Chassis No. 0 into the night’s dash.

In the dash Jonathan tried to make hay on the high side but he just didn’t have enough traction to get it done and he finished fifth to give the JP’s Paint & Body, Kistler Engines, Sharp Insurance, Tom Rolfe Trucking No. 0 a third row starting spot in the 30 lap feature.

By main event time there was nothing left on the track and it was a one lane expressway on the bottom. On lap four Jonathan lost a spot to Brett Miller to fall back to sixth, but on lap nine he returned the favor and got back by the youngster to re-claim fifth. Jonathan then began to close in on fourth running Jim Skinner and on lap 17 he was finally able to get underneath Skinner to move the Spy Optic, V-Mac Racing Products, Matt & Glass, T-5 Industries Maxim into fourth.

As the laps wound down, Miller closed back in on Jonathan and gave him a good clean run, but JA was able to hold him off and finish the 30 lap contest in the fourth position. Jonathan continues to sit third in Golden State Challenge Series points, but now finds himself 17 back of Sean Becker for the lead. The series now heads for Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico for the 17th running of the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial.

The Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial pays tribute to fallen race car driver Dave Bradway Jr. who lost his life in a sprint car crash at Skagit Speedway’s Dirt Cup in 1987. It is the biggest event of the season for the Golden State Challenge Series and Jonathan is one of only two drivers to have one the race three times. Extra money and goodies are on the line all evening which makes it an extremely fun night of competition at the Silver Dollar Speedway bullring.

Jonathan won his first Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial in 2001. It marked his first career win during his rookie season with the Golden State Challenge Series. He came back in 2003 and picked up another Bradway win and his most recent triumph came in 2005 during his first year driving the Williams Motorsports 0. If the every other year trend continues, we should see him in victory lane again this year. Too bad racing doesn’t always work that way but with the strength Jonathan and Williams Motorsports have had with the new ‘07 Maxim, he’s got a very good shot at becoming the first ever four-time winner of the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial. He’ll have to face some stout competition though and it won’t be an easy task.

The weekend will get underway on Friday with Silver Dollar Speedway Point Race #7. Jonathan brings a 20 point lead over Jason Statler in the track point standings into the night, which features a payday of $2,350 going out to the winner of the 25 lap feature. Saturday’s Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial will be GSC Round #10 and Jonathan will look to close the gap between himself and leader Sean Becker in the points. Becker is the only other driver to have won two or more point races at Silver Dollar this season, so it will be tough sledding come Saturday night.

Jonathan is more than capable of getting the job done though as he’s won four main events already this season at Silver Dollar, but none bigger than if he could do it this Saturday.

Jonathan Allard has won the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial three times in his career, but none would be bigger than if he could do it this weekend.
