I used to hang out at Lenard's in the '70's and make a pest of myself. He was always very gracious to me, however.
The first two photos are a couple of my favorites from this time period. (July 29, 1978)

Last picture, the kid facing away from the camera with the cap on, is that Terry?

I'm not sure. Terry would have turned 14 that year.
Maybe somebody in the McCarl family will see this and can answer.

Harriet - I'm sincerely sorry for any mistaken impression I may have made with the title of this thread.
Because of your comment, I have edited the title, however, so I don't inadvertently lead anyone else astray in this regard.
Lenard is still very much around and still active in the sport.
I just think that it's sometimes nice to stop and remember some of the drivers who are no longer actively driving just to let them know we haven't forgotten about them or their contributions to the sport.

Lenard is one of those tough legend guys that I just in my head think will be around forever. Very much like Al Pombo who was pretty much around forever when you consider the grand scheme of things but I don't think Lenard is anywhere near Al's age before passing just last year. Keep kicking ass Lenard!

I am so glad you saw these! While we certainly still have great races and racers, I will never forget all the great drivers and personalities of the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Unfortunately, too many of them are not around anymore to let them know how many great memories they left for a lot of fans like me.
If you would like a copy of these pictures, feel free to drop me an e-mail through Hoseheads and I will forward them to you.
Thanks for all the contributions your family has made (and sacrifices you have endured) for the sport of sprint car racing!

I always enjoy seeing posts talking about past drivers from Iowa (and surrounding states) and about Knoxville Raceway. My father grew up right down the road from Knoxville and went there for many many years. I've always enjoyed hearing about those days and it never gets old either! I was very fortunate to has seen Lenard drive a few times before he retired (I was VERY young!).
I will never forget one time my father and I were talking to Lenard at Little Springfield Speedway for an All Star race. I believe it was in 1987 because it was the last year they were open. Anyways, I was only 12 years old and very shy. We were talking to Lenard (Terry was driving for him I think) in the pits and Lenord offered me a pop. I said no thanks (again because I was shy) and he just belted out at the top of his lungs, "What the f_ck is wrong with you kid! Someone offers you a free drink and you dont take it!?!" I was like crap! So went over there and grabbed a pop and when I looked up at Lenard he had this big sh_t eating grin on his face and started laughing. For whatever reason I have never forgotten that and to this day it cracks me up thinking about it. I think ever since then, if someone offers me a free drink I aways say yes! hahaha...

Lets not forget Lenard was a hell of a chassis builder also. I do know as I have one of his mid 70's sprint cars that I race with MVVRCA. I have spoke to him and he is a very nice man and was a great asset to the sport.

A great point. The frames Lenard built won a lot of races in their day. Lenard was/is also a great mechanic and later, when he retired from driving and became a car owner, he proved himself to be a great chassis set up guy at Knoxville. He's also worked with a lot of up and coming young drivers at Knoxville in recent years.

When I saw the original post I said "Oh NO!!!" as I thought the worst...........thank goodness, I believe ol' Lenard still has a few more races in him.............was great to see him as part of the Holbrook/Call Nationals winning team last year, and I am sure he treasures the Nationals Trophy that is sitting in his house!

I think it about time to get Lenard in The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Lenard was a driver, builder, mechanic, owner and a advisor to his sons Kenny and Terry, now he has 2 grandsons, Austin is doing good and Austin is coming up to the full sized sprint cars. I remember when I-70 was open and Greg Weld would have the Woo’s over Labor Day weekend, Lenard would come down with his car, he had various drivers, he was a joy to talk to after the racing. I am sure there are many good stories about Lenard that could be told, I know a few about Lenard. Lenard always had time to talk to the race fans. Time to make Lenard a member of The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
Forgot also crew chief for other owners.
