Ken Stansberry takes final checkers by Ray Stansberry
My Dad passed away on 1-29-11 at 88. Above all my Dad was a racer. A car owner and driver from the late forties to the late fifties and a continued car owner until 1970. He raced anywhere he could. Typical weekend in the sixties, would be El Cajon Fri., Gardena on Sat. and San Francisco on Sunday. Blew a motor at ascot one night, no problem, I had just finished a 301 for my street rod so we stuck it in, drove all night and raced at Gridley , (near Chico) and won the dash and finished 3rd in the Main. Long time friend and wrench, Jim Peacock, had a lot of effort into the team.
Dad gave a lot of young drivers a shot at their first sprint car ride. Mike Mosley, Hank Butcher, Ed Lockhart, Jack Austin, Billy Wilkerson, Randy Wilkerson, Walt Rief, Parsons jr.,Les Crawford and many others. Dad was particularly proud of winning the '64 NARC championship as a car owner. He was kind of an onery cus as were most of the racers of that era. He never missed a race of mine or grandson Tom. We will miss him greatly.
