Don't insult artist who actually have talent and could lay "paint schemes" on race cars. It doesn't take much talent to lay graphics on a race car. I realize the cost and time factor have made graphics more desirable, but anyone with a computer and laser cutter can now call themselve an artist, can you say " cookie cutter" looking race cars

You are right number45, Paint is Awesome. But as I am finding out, you can't get a liquid color guy to spray an 18" x 24" panel for less than $200.00. By the time that the car is done you have $1200. in paint that gets destroyed by week 2. No, sadly I will be going with vinyl and powdercoat for 2011. Yet another team sold out to inkjet and apply.
The Blue car is cool.

Do both....the 360 is one color and the 410 is the other color.....sounds reasonable to me.

This car will have better results. Last yrs. car didn't like to win outside CA. The red one looks sexier but the blue is very clean. I gotta go with red!

While I'm all for people having their own opinions, and me being one of those guys who does/has done both types of lettering, I think this rant is totally uncalled for. It may not be the same "talent" to lay graphics on a race car, but it's not something an ape could do either, I'll guarantee you that. As far as graphic "talent" it still takes quite a bit to do a car in vinyl graphics (either plotted or wrapped) compared to old school hand painting. While there are some lettering companies out there (and I use that term loosely) who just do standard fonts, standard race car #'s, limited stripes...if any, and so on, this design is far from that. To do a full blown layout like this, the computer doesn't design the scheme for you, so the "artist" has to be talented enough to come up with graphics that flow with the body lines and still catch your eye, pick legible yet cool-looking fonts, skew and tweak them (or in some cases actually "build" them),design logos, and generally ensure that all those elements work well together. It's understandable that some people buck trends and don't like to accept change, but it's just the nature of the beast that probably 90% or more of race car graphics are now done with pressure sensitive materials rather than paint. I, for one, really enjoy seeing quality graphics, regardless of the medium used to reach the end result.

Well put, racinartist2. As a musician, I can say that in this day and age, art can indeed be created on a computer. It'd be like telling DJ Alchemist that he's a trained ape compared to Yo Yo Ma, because his creations are digital instead of tangible or manual. It's totally unfair to discredit someone's vision, just because they don't do it like you remember it when you were a kid. Playing drums on an electronic set, or programming digital beats are equally creative and, I'd say difficult, as playing on a traditional trap kit drum set. Just like creating a good looking race car with a brush, or a sheet of vinyl, both are difficult, and take artistic vision.
Hell, I'd challenge anyone who reads this to design, print and wrap a WoO car, and have it coming out of the trailer looking as good as any of the cars on the ASCS or WoO tour. If you can do it, my hat's off to you, because you know what? I can't. Don't know how, it's totally over my head, and it's just not where my talent lays.

Hey Ryan, thanks for the comment. Fortunately (or unfortunately I guess, depending on individual perspective) I'd like to think I'm one of those guys who could ace that challenge you posed. Recently though, I've basically steered my career away from that aspect of the business. Lettering race cars is very cool and can really challenge a guy's creativety, but lately I've found myself entrenched in the commercial end of the graphics market. Being a "starving artist" got old a long time ago, and the financial compensation is muuuuuuch better than it is with motorsports. That's not to say I wouldn't take on doing a new design if it were offered to me again. It might still be fun to do one once in a while...
