From the Victorville Daily Press

Racetrack getting new promoter
Venue expected to host more events in 2011

VICTORVILLE • More than a dozen people are competing to promote the racetrack at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds as organizers look at adding more local events and better deals for the public.

“There’s a lot of interest in the High Desert to come up here and race,” said Ken Alstott, general manager of the fairgrounds on Seventh Street in Victorville.

Mike Gibson has promoted events at the Victorville Auto Raceway for the past several years. But when Gibson’s contract expired at the end of 2010, Alstott said the racetrack ended up with letters of interest from 14 other individuals and companies who wanted to take it over.

Staff put out a request for proposals to promote the track on Friday, with hopes to have a recommended bid before the fair’s board of directors for approval next month.

So what does this mean, that now that Mike Gibson has worked his backside off promoting the track up to what it is, that they will pass it on to some cronies of a Fair Board member? Or am I way off base on this one? I can be pretty cynical sometimes.

My understanding is that there was a number of people who were not paid last season. I would imagine the fair board wouldn't be too excited to hear from people that they aren't getting paid. Irregardless of whether any of that is true or not, the fair board in question only grants 1 year concession contracts so he should know the possibility of competition exists each year.

Thank you Rich. Interesting points. In general it is always better if cynicism is unfounded. And it is never good when people are not paid for what they do. If what you say is true, it seems Gibson had not built the track up to what I thought it was. Or what it should be. May the best win the contract.
