Nice tow rig

Here's just an example of what the photo editing program can do. As you can see I cropped out a lot of the photo. Made the blues a little more blue. The white trailer tires are just a little more white. The only thing I did wrong was I lost maybe a little focus. It might not be worth enhancing a photo? But some photos can be faded from storage. If a person gets really good they can even take out scratches etc. You can put text on your photos. Just an example.

I have been trying to remember when Alan Combs quit racing? My memory just don't remember him much after the 76 era racing.

In the pic of Riffels tow rig the pic was taken in 1966 when the chevelle was fairly new. In the picture the car still has the stock wheels and hub caps,no rear air shocks and he had not added his Trade Mark Racing Stripe to the car yet >>>>.

I'm not real sure when Alan Offically quit racing. I do have two trophys from the championships we won at Salt Hawk Speedway from 1976 and 1977. I do know he didn't continue much after that >>>>.

I was straining my memory banks and was thinking you might have been listed as the owner? I know you said sometime back you built the engines. But now I think that was his younger brother? I'm thinking the last year was when him and Mel Potts had the twin looking Camaro's. Probably was 77.

Combs and Potts teamed up in 73 or 74 and they ran identical Chevelles. This is the same time frame I went racing with Riffel. Riffel quit in 75 so I went back to the Combs team as Riffel had chosen to go tractor pulling and as much as I liked Kenny and Pat I guess I liked dirt track racing better. I built engines for Combs until he quit and I do know we raced in 78 but I just can't remember the exact date that he retired. Alan's younger brothers name was Craig >>>>.

Was just thinking about the tow rig a few days ago. Not sure if an early thread on RFTP or another forum, but was a story about Frank and Kenny going to a race in Louisiana. Kenny was sleeping and Frank was driving. Kenny thought they got stopped, but Frank told him a story that the trooper was just asking directions or some such. Later, Kenny found a ticket where Frank was going 95 with the trailer and car behind the Chevelle. The baby rat was probably just starting to run good at about that speed. Frank kicked butt in Louisiana, so the promoter impounded the car overnight. Don't know if they ever got any prize money.

I guess ole Max McGinnis with Wynn's had a problem with the STP sticker. Wynn's was big in dirt track racing

Part of my prized possessions

I remember that story about on the way to Louisiana. I think those races in Shreveport were MARCAR races ran by Bud Carson.

Here's a pic of the tow rig at the Louisiana State Fair Grounds. Notice the M/T Mags and the stripe on the side of the car. I know the stripe is hard to see but it's there. Air shocks had been added at this time too to help out with the extra load. This shot also shows the trade mark Oak Rear Bumper !! The race was good !! >>>>.

Another view of the car and trailer. This photo is labeled "Hutchinson, 1969". (Judy Graber photo from the Lies collection)

The Louisiana State Fair photo was evidently after the track was asphalted. Notice the asphalt tires.

NASCAR has records showing Frank and Kenny ran a NASCAR race in New Jersey or Pennslyvania or maybe it was Virginia.

I loved that car with the wood bumper. They did not race very much here in Tulsa but you knew when they were here. In 1969 they raced 3 times and won 2 features Frankie and Jackie Howerton were the only ones that could race with Harold Leep here in 1969. Harold won 13 features Jackie won 6, Frankie won 2, that is 21 out of 28 features. Dale Mcdaniel won 1, Buddy Cagle won 4 in the Zink roadster but the track had to hit that car it was just not as fast as Harold. The next year John Zink built an Edmonds style car for Jackie Howerton to drive and used the roadster for a backup. When you saw the 55 go through the pit gate you knew it was going to be a good night.
