You don't need no stinkin' Chili Bowl midget race live when you can turn on Speed Channel and thrill to trucks with over-sized tires jumping '33 Chevrolet beer wagons in front of the lowest I.Q. spectators on the planet, or maybe watch old fart geeks at an auto auction pay 120k for a Boss 302 Mustang because it has matching numbers and the original gas in the tank, all the while hearing the thrilling play-by-play action from the most boring commentator on the planet!

You don't need no stinkin' live Chili Bowl!

The reality is the fact that it's more profitable for Speed to show those crap shows that you cite rather than a live (or even delayed) Chili Bowl.

Economics suck.

But they do make the world go around.

I think?

Sadly both Steve Evans and Diamond P are dead. What we are left with is a POS called the SpeedChannel and a NASCAR sell-out named Despain. You are correct Scraper, it is sad.

Gotta thank Lance for what little footage we have from Tulsa.

Actually I was thinking of Bob Varsha because he's does the Barrett auction stuff and I have to put up with him in order to see live F1. I make sure I watch F1 with my finger over the mute button so I can get a little relief from Varsha when it becomes too much for even a hard core racing freak like me to take, especially when he starts speculating on what a race driver is thinking. Like he'd have a clue. It's kinda like Entertainment Tonight covers the races.

I'm pasting a link to a Utube video of Brian Redman driving a Lola T600 from years ago. It has nothing to do with dirt racing, but everything to do with race coverage by an announcer who isn't caught up in his own importance like the Speed Channel group. Also as an example to those who think the sun rises and sets on "production values" instead of content.

After watching the clip, I must comment...

It appears to me that the commentary was done "post-production", that is, the commenctary was laid in from a script after the race was filmed. Most of Varsha's F1 work in done live, from an F1 feed of the race. He's in a studio somewhere, not at the race, so any conjecture from his is necessary, since he's not even at the race. It's not fair, IMO, to compare a scripted voice-over to a spontaneous commentary.

Will the spontaneous work contain more errors? Likely...but a script should be error free!

The last I heard, the announcers for F1 are doing it from a studio in Connecticut. The broadcasts are dependent on a local feed. I remember many years ago the local feed was coming from the Argentinan Grand Prix. The cameras never let the local countryman out of sight even though he running down in 5th place. If they are broadcasting live and they are in attendence of the event, they may be in an announcer booth, but they are reporting on what they see on the TV monitor. Even if a multi car crash happens right in front of them. At most they might say something like, "their is a caution flag being shown."

Speed was there filming for a projected Feb 5th telecast. Dave Argabright was doing driver interviews. You won't believe what you see during the main event plus I'm sure they will show the "Flip Finish" from earlier in the week.
