They both look like the cat that just ate the canary. (As well they should given their success at the time.)

Great job!
Indeed taken at Eldon, IA. on Aug. 14, 1971. I definitely remember that this was a Sunday afternoon show, and if my memory is correct, it was the day after the Knoxville Nationals. Hank Smith is actually in the left side of the picture and Wagner on the right.

Sgt. Schultz also doesn't know up from down ..... or was it my other left?? I was off on the year too.
You are lucky ....I inherited some 30 to 40 year old colored pics from those days and even though they were stored in a box .....they had yellowed a lot more than yours.

While I was at Knoxville the night of that terrible incident, I don't remember the year.
I'll bet Bob Mays knows though!

I wish places like Eldon, Ia. still ran sprints on occasion.

I agree! I've only been to Eldon a couple times (a while ago) for IMCA Deery Bros races (ick) - but seems like it would be a good track for sprints.

As a kid, I remember going to Eldon. IMCA sprint show during the fair was traditionally ran on Sunday afternoon following the Knoxville Nationals. As I recall rather small fields, mostly IMCA faithful that didn't run nats, as many teams were just worn out, and I recall the weather being HOT!!!
Later, in the '70s and maybe early '80s, NSCA would run night shows there a few weeks before the nationals when there were some "guns" in the area. Those were usually good shows.
Do they race anything there these days? Seems like Sprint Invaders would be a good fit.
