Warren, That is Joe Herrera in the 45.

Your right but there was a Bob wasn't there. I think they both raced. Maybe Bob and Joe were brothers or Bob was Joe's dad and Joe is Johnny's dad.

Photo contributed by J.D. & Jannie Porter
Joe Herrera from Albuquerque, drove this #45. Joe and owner Bud Popkes made several trips to the Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas areas in the late 70's, mainly to NCRA races. Joe served as president of the Albuquerque Racing Association. Joe is The father to Johnny Herrera.
Joe is still very much involved in racing owning the 45x.

Side note to the photo: In the background is the super of #42 Fox Temple of Tulsa. This is the only photo I have of The #42 in this color scheme. I believe it was a former Junior Taft super.
Photo #415

I just heard from Fox Temple. He is living in Texas in the winter time and Grand Lakes in Oklahoma in the summer.

He has no photos at all left of his racing days. So if any one reading this has any photos of Fox I'm sure he would appreciate see them on here. Better yet you send them to him. I have an e-mail.

How about the top of the helmet protruding out of the top of the cage on Herrera's car. Quite interesting.

Oren Haas and Arnold Horner from Kansas use to stick through farther than that. They were both big guys. Oren ran the modifieds and then the supers some. He is better known for his semi-late and late model racing though. Arnold of course died of his injuries from a wreck at 81. I always wondered if it was head injuries because of his height?

This car is in the process of being cloned. The right people are on it in OkC. That's all i can divulge right now. I'm donating the tail section and the nose, and it will be a couple of years before it's done.

In 1975 when the #71 modified was new Mike Peters helmet would stick above the cage. You could only see it from behind the car with Mike siting in it. Mike was pulling away from the pits one night and I was standing next to Norman and he said that that scared him and he was going to do something about that winter. In the winter of 75/76 Norman had Jelly cut the back of the cage off and raise it 4" that is why the 71 looked different when it was a super. I guess since that Premier Helmets has gone out of business I can tell this story. Mike was using a full face Premier Helmut in the 75 season and he found that no matter how tight you fixed it the chin strap would come off of your chin and the helmet could come off your head. He ordered a new Bell full face helmet from Roy Loving Speed shop here in Tulsa. When he got the new helmet he took the Premier one to the Tulsa officials and showed them how it would come off no mater how tight it was . I guess that they were afraid of a law suit and allowed the other drivers to still use this helmet. I do not know if it is true or not but when Len Perlich was killed in the late 70s at Tulsa I heard that he had a Premier Helmet on and it came off.
