Brazier- Stewart Clash Set To Excite
Can NASCAR ace Tony Stewart turn the tables on six times Australian Champion Garry Brazier?
That’s the intriguing question approaching the $10,000-to-win Sydney Sprintcar International at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway on December 29.
Brazier drove to one of the most impressive victories in his long and illustrious career when he took out at 31st running of the Valvoline Australian Sprintcar Grand Prix on December 27.
It was the Brazier-Stewart show for most of the GP as they swapped the lead several times, banged wheels and generally squared off in a sensational shootout at a frenetic pace all the way to the chequered flag.
At one point tensions ran high in the heat of battle and hostilities will continue on December 29.
Stewart was nothing short of sensational, while Brazier said later he just loved the challenge racing against the likes of Stewart and Donny Schatz who finished third in the GP as defending titleholder.
“I love racing against the likes of these guys,” Brazier said after his great GP win.
“It’s no disgrace to finish between two National Champions,” Stewart acknowledged after his runner GP finish.
It all sets up a classic confrontation between the chief protagonists Wednesday night.
The American line-up further increases with the arrival in Sydney of Joey Saldana, Craig Dollansky and Cody Darrah, bringing the total number of US stars for December 29 to seven.
The full US line-up reads: Tony Stewart, Donny Schatz, Brian Montieth, Saldana, Darrah, Dollansky and Jason Sides.
Saldana, driving for Kasey Kahne Racing, means business and is cracking to get back on the high banks of the Tyrepower Sydney Speedway oval.
He has freighted to Australia all his own equipment out of the KKR workshop in what clearly represents one of his most serious assaults on Tyrepower Sydney Speedway.
Saldana has had some phenomenal highs and lows at the iconic Sydney venue and he using the December 29 fixture as a solid workout in preparation for the $50,000 Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic on January 2 and 3.
Dollansky also is back and is driving for Tasmanian owner Darren Goodyer. Both Saldana and Dollansky return to Sydney after strong seasons on the World of Outlaws trail. Saldana finished fourth in the final WoO 2010 standings, while Dollansky was seventh in this year’s WoO Championship.
Darrah on the other hand just wants to get racing laps. Earlier this year Cody was headed to Daytona to watch Kasey Kahne race in the “500” when he was involved in a terrible road accident in which he sustained a severely broken leg.
The purpose of his Australian visit is to get back in the seat of a sprintcar and return to race fitness after he spent virtually the entire 2010 American season recovering from a badly broken leg.
Meanwhile Ian Loudoun just wants to get another shot at not only the Yanks, but also Brazier following an incident in the GP which Loudoun clearly blamed Brazier. Former Australian Sprintcar Champion Todd Wanless has filed a nomination while Supercar racer Paul Morris is set to drive the Northern Territory #67 car for owner Bob Smith.
Also on the card is the running of the NSW Lightning Sprint Championship supported by the Fender Benders.
