What is the best way to go about identifying an unknown frame ?? ... there are front and rear axles in it, so do I measure center to center for WB, and then from front of motorplate to center or leading edge of rear axle for setback ?? ... are there certain identfying signs to look for in the frame, such as a specific bar ran a certain way, or maybe 'hidden' numbers or marks that frame builders have used?? ... and last of all, how important is it to actually know what brand of frame it is?? it has axles, bars, and arms installed, so can one just measure off of everything to find replacements, etc ?? ... it is an older downtube car, and without tearing it all apart (I dont own it)at this point I haven't been able to find any identfying marks ... thank you

I have saw numbers on the right side tube where the steering mount is(J&J), the upright on the left side where the dash attaches(Maxim & XXX), I think we had a Gambler that had marks on the butt bar(the bar that keeps the rearend from hitting the seat). Might try some of those, if you have all the parts though, it is up to you whether you want to know who made it. I am sure there are some other places that I don't know about though????

We starter with an '89 gambler that had a real clean stamped number on the right side horizontal bar just under the steering gear mount. Our 02' Maxim has it's numbers on the steel safety or liability tag on the butt bar in the rear. I am told that it is also supposed to have a number welded into the diagonal bar on the left side of the cage near the lower rail and the motorplate. Of course it doesn't.
Good luck finding it. When I bought my first car I was not smart enough to realize that they were marked at all. I paid way to much money for a "2001" / 1989 Gambler. What can I say, I'm not too bright!
