Can anyone recommend a good history of auto racing? I am interested in purchasing some auto racing literature about the history of auto racing, and auto racing in Iowa.

The USAC book that's out is pretty cool. 50 years of USAC racing. It's not cheap though. The Sprint Car Hall of Fane website has lots of books for sale. I have the USAC book and really like it. Lots of history. I read Doug Wolfgang's book "Lone Wolf" and really enjoyed it as well. Dave Argabright wrote it and he has several other books as well. Check out "The American Scene." www.daveargabright.com

Bud Hunnicutt wrote the book "Up on the Wheel". It is mostly about Kansas City racing but does have some regional stuff in there too. Check out this thread.....

It's not necessarily a racing history book, but Chris Economaki's "Let 'Em All Go" was one of the best books I've ever read.

Two thumbs up for Economaki's autobio. I would argue that it IS the history of auto racing...from one man's point of view. Nobody has witnessed more racing than Mr E.

I got the Usac book for $25 at 4-crown this year.I believe it came out in 2005. Maybe that is why I got it so cheap. It is a very nice book.

Google Dave Argabright's web site = anything that he's written, be it with Hewitt, Baltes, Economaki, or Bill Smith is worth the read...

And the USAC book is for sale, on the USACRacing web site, for $25.00....Quite a bargain, if you ask me.....

I have two books written by Bob Mays that are very good. I can't remeber the name of the first one (and it is currently packed away,) but it is on racing in the midwest, primarily Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. The other is "Big Car Thunder- Sprint Cars on America's Fair Circuit."

Anything by Dave Argabright. Joe Scalzo stuff is usually very good, too.

You might want to checkout "Rose Racing Publications" for books on Sprint Car Racing History - USAC, IMCA, URC CSRA and the CRA. plus the Indy Cars on the Short Tracks and "Racers at Rest" the memorial tribute to the 1,500 drivers who have lost their lives in Open Wheeled Racing since 1907. Check out the website at www.roseracingpublications.com or go to Rose Racing Publications on facebook.

http://www.coastal181.com is where I sometimes order books from. They have a large selection of books from stock car racing to sprint cars as well. I see they have the Jim Hurtibise book on sale for $20 and change, which is a good deal.

The USAC book, already mentioned is a good deal at $25.

The thread that was referred to dates back to 2008 and there have been two reprints since then. They are available from the Sprint Car Hall of Fame,Coastal 181 and from Bud as well at 816-331-2220. Because of the fame of a number of the drivers such as Kenny ,Jerry ,Greg and Pappy Weld,Jud Larson,Gordon Woolley,Ray Lee Goodwin,Jon Backlund,Carl Williams it was surprising to find the appeal it had to fans all over the country. Not just the driving records that they set but the personalities and the funny stories about the individuals.
