What are your practices for getting your stuff prepared for the winter. I know most guys back the valves off but I know there's some that don't find it necessary. Do you remove all the fuel lines or just flush them? Do you remove the fuel cell or just drain it? What about the injection. I know the basic premise is the same across the board. I was just looking for some insight into the details. I thought it would be cool to share some ideas and techniques.

I pull pushrods completey out , blow lines and bathe with wd-40 , same with pump bypasses ,filter , and barrelvalve , I drop water, I also do flush with stricly antifreez 100% glycol,to the block and removed radiator, clean Nozzels as I would weekly(sonic), again wd-40 bath , store in plasic bag , Ive heard different testimony on fuel storage and tried a few different practices, the lower grade methanol we stored one year turned a yellow tint, (I didnt have a hydrometer at the time so we dumped it ) last years leftovers were simply left in the trailer during all off season , tightly sealed and not prone to sunlight ect , later (pre season) a Hydo was tested and provided 99% pure methanol , high humidity is not likely In frozen climates (dates pending), full containers have less room for condisation, JMO take it for what its worth? good topic.

You can't over winterize , I take the main line off the barrel valve and spray lots of marvel mystery oil in ,hold the throttle wide open n blow through with a airhose, take all the hoses off the pump poor oil in the main pump n turn it a little with a 7/16" so the oil is coating it good and put caps on the fittings n store it in a baggy ,spray oil in the secondary high speed n main jet bypasses ,,,drain ALL the water out of the block n poor some antfreeze in it ,back off the rockers or turn the motor over with the u joint every week or 2 if u can't adjust the valves yourself ,,,its a pretty good practice to start the motor and let it run a bit and clean the nozzle a few times before you run your first main off next year a clogged nozzle is a spendy start to a new season if it burns s piston ,probably forgot a cpl things but its a start good luck

Thought I would add this.Pull all your spark plugs, then rotate the engine over manually at least twice to make sure no fuel is in the cylinders, which is common. Then spray mystery oil in the spark plug holes and rotate engine over again.Fuel left sitting will pit the hell out of the cylinder walls.I have the cheaper model sonic cleaner, and I can't see that it does much of anything.I have been spraying thru my nozzles with spray carb cleaner,it gets the crud out.I was told to use white vinegar in the sonic cleaner,is there something better to use? All good practices above,I will add that when I blow out the barrel valve,I start with the secondary line off and the throttle closed. That way it will pop off and blow out the fuel, then add oil in the valve and do the same to lube it up.As mentioned above with butterflies open it will blow out the nozzle lines.

How about brakes, steering, rear end, etc in sub zero areas ?? tires that are loose/or mounted best to store on their sides (in basement) with or without air? etc ... thanks

Great job guys, wish more people would follow what you say. All of your maintenance ideas are very good.

Like I tell everyone and yes I'll repeat what some of you said.

1) take spark plugs out and push car around getting fuel out. Squirt about a teaspoon of Marvel or Tranny fluid down injector and push car around, this will coat cylinder walls.

2) remove nozzle lines and fuel line from barrell valve and blow air through bv. Same thing, squirt or pour a little Marvel or tranny fluid down bv and gently blow air through bv, again coating the inside of lines.

3) Taking all fuel lines off and blowing them out isn't a bad idea.

4) Take fuel pump off and turn with wrench, then again Marvel or tranny fluid and spin again.

5) Backing rocker arms off or removing completely is a mandatory!!

6) A sonic cleaner is a great idea and really the only way to clean nozzles!! Call me I have the solution for them, $45.00 for a gallon and will last you years. Poor boy way to clean nozzles is to boil some vinegar and throw the nozzles in for about 20 minutes.

7) If you have a "wire" mesh fuel filter, again a sonic cleaner is the only way to go!! Alot og guys just spray brake clean and call it good. No no no!!! When you do that it's just "compacting" the stuff into the filter clogging it up. This is stuff you can't see with your eyes. It is a good idea to replace your fuel filter once or twice during the season. If it's a paper filter, change about every 3-4 shows, and no the in the tank filters aren't worth a shit!!!!

Man I'm learning a bunch on here guys. I have spent my career on the asphalt where we didn't deal with things like methanol and fuel injection. It was all quite simplified and straight forward. What do you guys recommend for a sonic cleaner? I know Harbor Freight and Speedway sells one but neither are heated and both have plastic baskets. They both go for about $80. Thanks again for all the info.

I use hoppy gun barrel cleaner in my sonic cleaner to clean nozzles and they look like new.
