Who is your favorite national driver?
Who is your favorite local driver?

I would have to say that Jerry Richert Sr. was my favorite driver when I was a kid closely followed by Jerry Lepinski and Scratch Daniels.
In more recent years since I've been doing the racing media work I really don't think it would be right for me to have any favorites. There are drivers that I know better than others and some have a more pleasant personality to work with.
Twenty five years ago I'd get my latest issue of Open Wheel and I was in awe of the writers and photographers. I thought guys like John Sawyer and Al Consoli did awesome work and I devoured every word written and every photo displayed. Today being able to contribute to the sport myself is nothing short of a dream come true.

I have the same criteria, no matter what level, local or national ... The driver who does the most, on a consistent basis, with the absolute least ... the guy who shows up to chuckles at his simple operation ... but with his diligence to detail, his natural (or developed) talent to drive a race car, no matter what kind, he does well with it ... the guy that turns the severly underfunded team into a competitive team ... and maybe even more important, the guy that shows every time out how much he loves what he is doing, as he never hesitates to take the time to answer the questions from younger or less experienced competitors in an attempt to help them improve ... and perhaps even most important, he/she is willing to go out of his way to welcome and accomodate each and every fan/spectator or journalist every opportunity he/she gets to share the positive side of the sport he loves ..
Its getting harder and harder to find a favorite , according to some of these requirements, in any of the major sports ... JMHO

I also respect anybody who has the guts to strap into a racecar and to follow their dreams. But I do have a couple of drivers that stick out as some of my favorites.
Local: WISSOTA 360 sprint car driver Loren Langerud (SP?). That guy was fearless when it came to racing at Red River Valley Speedway. Watching him drive next to the big cement wall at over 115 MPH was quite a site to see.
National: World of Outlaw driver Jac Haudenschild. The guy doesn't know fear but is as calm as can be. He will race hard for 1st or 20th. When Jac is on the track he is the guy to watch for a show.

Going back quite a few years here, but my favorite local driver was John Stevenson with Jerry Richert, Sr. coming in second. Unfortunately, neither of them are with us any longer.
In the current era, I like way too many drivers to even begin to pick a favorite.
