Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series signs with Goodyear to become official tire

By Gary Thomas

Rio Vista, CA – November 4, 2010…The Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series announced today that it has signed an agreement with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company to be the official tire supplier for the 2011 racing season.

“Goodyear has made a significant investment in sprint car racing over the last year and we’re happy to bring them on board with the Golden State King of the West Sprints,” said series managing director Dan Simpson. “Goodyear has made tires that have created some fantastic racing across the country and having them associated with us will be a big benefit to our overall marketing program.”

Goodyear grabbed the attention of the dirt track racing world this past year when a number of sprint car sanctioning bodies and tracks around the country announced they would partner with the company. The announcements, especially that Goodyear would sponsor the 2010 Goodyear Knoxville Nationals continued the tire maker's long tradition of dirt track success.

Goodyear is one of the world’s largest tire companies. It employs approximately 70,000 people and manufactures its products in more than 60 facilities in 25 countries around the world. Its two Innovation Centers in Akron, Ohio and Luxembourg strive to develop state-of-the-art products and services that set the technology and performance standard for the industry. Good news for Goodyear, good news for the organization getting the money, bad news for the owners who pay for the pleasure. Who benefits?

The drivers that follow the series due to the additonal purse. Just ask the PA drivers... I have heard they had record payouts this year in Central PA.

What will happen when KOTW runs Chico and Placerville? Does the series mandate the tire or can the promotor? Civil war guys, like Forsberg and others who also run KOTW will have to carry both brands.

Don't the cars need to have new rubber pretty often as it is?? I mean they only last a couple of races at most anyway on a winged 410 car right???

i have always thought it would be better for teams that run in multiple series and motor classes to be able to use the same tires in each. as far as your question about rubber and reading into it a bit as far as what does it matter what tire brand is used..... if you are running just one track or series, you don't have a problem, you buy tires and you replace them as you need to. it all depends on track conditions and how hard you have run the car and just what condition your tires are in. teams with money to burn will replace tires that other teams (even good teams that spend less money) would still run some more.

if you are running different series or tracks that might have different tire rules, things get more complicated, and more expensive. most of the tire rules now only regulate the rear tires, so you don't have to worry about having different brands for the front. to make it simple, lets say you have no rear tires. so you are going to a race and you need rear tires. the race you are going to requires you to run goodyears so you by two new RR tires. now you need at least two LR tires so you have a spare and possibly a different stagger choice. most teams like to have 3 or 4 different stagger choices. so you are looking at buying anywhere from 4 to 6 tires at an average of around $220 each when everything is said and done. lets say the track is pretty good and you run one RR the whole night and you still have one new one. you also have bought a total of 3 LR's and you ran two of them and they are both still good and you have one new one. the RR you ran might be a throw away or it might be good enough to hot lap or run a heat race. now you go the next night, or the next race to another series or track that uses hoosiers instead of goodyears. you have 4 useable goodyears (plus maybe one RR you can get a few laps out of) mounted in your trailer that cost you $220 each, but you cant run them. they are mounted on wheels that cost you an average of (lets be kind here) $400. you now need to buy at least 2 RR's and 2 or 3 LR's that cost...you guessed it....about $220. now you also need to dismount and mount those approx 8 or so tires, or have more wheels (at $400 a pop) to mount them on. now every time you race at places that require different tires you either have to have separate inventories of tires and wheels or play musical tires and wheels and switch them back and forth. also remember that you will be wearing out different tires at different intervals and you may be finding yourself buying new tires every night you race just to have the correct tire you need for a certain track when you have perfectly good tires that you can't use.

keep in mind even a low budget team can have 3 to 4 RR tires and 4 to 6 LR tires all in various stages of wear, and on different wheel offsets mounted and ready to use at all times. that is just to run one tire brand. and that is just talking rear tires.

in our area we have several teams that have been supporting multiple tracks and classes of winged sprint cars. they have been able to run the same tires everywhere they race. if they can't continue to do that, it may limit their ability to continue to afford to support those multiple tracks and classes.

again, i am not saying what tires should be run, i am saying if a tire rule is to be implemented in an area, just pick one and let it be used everywhere. we only have so many cars in the area that are continuing to race on a regular basis. i would like to see as many of them show up at every race as possible.

that is just my view on things. i hope every series and track has success and thinks about and takes care of their teams because that is the product they are selling.

to indy and beyond!!
