As of 5pm still time trialing sportsman cars. The 358 and big block qualifying races took much longer than expected. Lots of stuff torn up. The King of the Mile exhibition will be up next. Warm-up speeds were relatively slow.--109mph average speeds. VERY VERY windy here today. Cars are a handful on the mile.

Johnny:
Ask Jason how he did donuts with the gear they must have to run there! How did they look?

LOL That is Syracuse. The place used to run to run three races a year, but now runs just one time a year. Syracuse has been "rubber down" for decades. Last year, the track also had a tractor pull on the frontstretch during the New York State Fair in September that created trenches several feet deep entering the first turn for the racing during Super DIRT Week.

It was soooo cool seeing 410s back on the mile. Let me reiterate...It was sooooooo cool seeing 410s back on the mile.
The track surface was horrible (as Syracuse usually is every October) and Jason Sides said the wind and lack of body work was moving the car around quite a bit on the straights. In an interview he did afterword, he was quoted saying, "This is a place sprint cars don't need to be". But then went on to say what could be done to improve handling and aerodynamics, almost making it sound like he thought it could be feasible to race sprints there again.
As far as on the track, they weren't running balls to the wall or anything, but even seeing them getting pushed off and just idling around the first couple laps gave me chills. The 4 drivers seemed to use the hot lap session more as just a warm up, checking setups and so on, and none of them were really on the hammer during those few laps. When they came back out for the "dash" though, Sides was on the move, especially for it not being race conditions. He actually looked really fast, and I was told he was turning 28 second laps, which is a little over 3 seconds off the track record set by Pauch 15+ years ago (24.89 if memory serves) with a purpose-built sprint car just for the mile. Maybe Gibson can confirm Sides' lap time, but that's what I was told at the track by a very reliable official source.
I, for one, would love to see them do a "dash" like that every year at SDW. And, even though they may not see this message, I would personally like to thank Jason and the other 3 drivers for venturing out and doing this. It made this guy's week for sure. Soooo Cool.

According to a few sources with the world racing group..They will most likely never "race" again on the mile because of insurance purposes and fear of a serious accident or death..Remember the state of new york owns the track...

That's the same info I got, slidewayz. Like I said though, I would love to see them just do a dash format like that every October.
Also, I got confirmation on Jason's lap times. He turned a 28.058. That's moving for what the track conditions were on Friday.
