King of the West Sprint Car series to hold grand opening of new offices on October 9 & 10

By Gary Thomas

Rio Vista, CA – October 1, 2010…The newly formed King of the West Sprint Car series will be holding a grand opening for our new business office at the upcoming 63rd annual Bass Festival in Rio Vista, California on October 9 and 10.

The new King of the West Sprint Car office is located at 303 Main St.
Rio Vista, CA 94571 and the phone number is (707) 374- 2222.

We’d like to invite everyone to the grand opening on Saturday and Sunday October 9 & 10 that will be held in conjunction with the Rio Vista Bass Festival. There will be race cars and a race trailer on display in front of the office, with it being part of a giant classic car show on Saturday and a motorcycle show on Sunday.

Every year for the past 63 years the town of Rio Vista, located on the Sacramento River, has held a Bass Fishing Derby in the waterways of the Sacramento Delta. As the oldest Bass Derby on the West Coast, the event draws over 1000 anglers who fish for Striped Bass in over 1000 miles of meandering delta waterways, which stretch from the Benicia Bridge, to Stockton and Sacramento, following the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers.

In combination with the derby the Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce puts on a citywide festival open and free to all. Streets are closed to traffic as the locals and visitors stroll through the area. It’s a place to enjoy a special linguica sandwich or BBQ, ride a roller coaster, bumper cars, tall slides or win a goldfish.

A classic car show on Saturday lines Main St. with over 200 pre-1974 cars and trucks with awards in 5 categories. Back by popular demand is the awesome Rio Vista motorcycle show, attracting bikers from all over Northern California.

More information on the 63rd annual Rio Vista Bass Derby and Festival can be found at

Very interesting, so is the series still going on as planned, just without the GSC name?

With or without GSC name it doesnt matter. It's just great to know Dan Simpson is willing to continue to go forward with or without GSC name. Lets all support and back up Dan. He has a vision that he wants 410 sprint car to continue and grow in the West.

King of the West Sprint Car Series LOVE IT!!!

Looking forward to the 410 and 360 sprints car racing next years! wink

Lots of changes in 2010 and sprint car racing needed it.

Good luck Dan Simpson and his supports.

It cant be any worst than what GSC had. I have this vision it will be much better than what Handy Racing Promotions has done for 410 and 360 sprint cars. All the gossip that just happened this week and did Simpson just give up? No... it looks like he just swept that under the table and moved on without GSC and Handy Racing Promotions. No matter what it cant be any worst than what has been happening the last few years with Alan Handy and John Padjen.

Wish I would have went to the banquet because there was a lot of positive talking going on after discussing the new GSC. Well now since GSC is no longer part of them and it the King of the West Sprint Car Series I still feel the drivers that were talking about running next year 410 series will still jump on board.

You asked "just hope that he gets the car counts he wants," I would say yes or close to it.

What drivers do you think will run this new series?

Well, this could work out...as long the GSC and Handy don't get into a p***ing match over scheduling dates with the new series. This could turn ugly, since most California tracks that run GSC races have a long established relationship with Handy and the GSC. Will they be loyalists to the GSC?

I think that 410 racers might have options for the first time, in 2011....but racers will go where the money and opportunity is perceived to be the greatest!

By my count, and I definitely could be missing a few cars, and there always could be a few surprises, but I could come up with 19 cars that could possibly run the series full time or at least close to it if they decide to go with Simpson.

the 3 Kaedings
Allard
Tarlton
Larson
Suggs
Geving
Statler
Bobby Mcmahon
Brandon Carey
Pat Harvey
Matt Davis
Mark Barroso
Andy Gregg
Mark Workentine
Cory Eliason
the 2 Simpsons

GSC and Handy are the same thing. GSC is Handy. Pissing match, there shouldn't be any. The drivers will go where the money is.

Was Alan Handy loyal to Dan Simpson? We kept hearing Handy sold GSC to Simpson to take over GSC. I think 90% of the racing community knew Handy sold GSC to Simpson. This week the post appeared "Sale off". Was it Simpson that pulled the plug or Handy?

"Will they be loyalist to the GSC?" I would say NO. The track will go with who ever can bring the fans in the stands and put on a good show. I will have to say I've been impressed with Dan Simpson. I've been in the grandstands and he has the drivers come into the stands and meet the kids during the break. I thought thats a great idea. And to watch the kids getting autographs put a smile on my face. Handy, what do they do "Give your flagman a hug".

Nothing against Handy, but tell me what has he done for the fans and drivers? Increase of pit passes, increase in grandstand tickets, increase in concession, and I'm sure there are more.

I will support going to the King of the West Sprint Car Series over GSC.

hope they have GoodYears in their trailers -- since Handy just signed with Hoosier and Simpson has GoodYears and the economy the way it is, we'll see just what the plans are. i can see Handy and Simpson splitting the 410 count and maybe Handy doing a 360 weekly show instead of 410s and let the 410s travel. this series will be a traveling series too so you'll have to have that money as well unless Simpson is paying tow money to just show up- local 410 racing will suffer, but there were no cars anyway - interesting

I am just happy someone is taking the initiative to revive and grow 410 racing out west. I don't believe this series will be made or broken by running Chico or Placerville. Chico only host 3 events that get me there. The Mini Gold Cup, the Bradway Memorial and the Gold Cup. I look forward to hearing more details on this new series. You have my support Mr. Simpson!

i am just thinking out loud (very dangerous), but i am wondering if there will even be a GSC. as far as tires, i noticed that it was announced that SDS, Placerville and Civil War will all use Hoosiers, but i saw no mention of GSC. i am wondering what the effect if any the different choice of tires for the new series will have. wondering if that will limit cross pollination between any events or series. at ocean speedway for example there are quite a few teams that run both the Taco Bravo 360 Series and the GSC. now if the new 410 series runs goodyears and most of the 410 teams that formerly ran GSC opt to run the new series, they could find themselves having to have two different tire brands on hand as ocean has been running hoosiers and the Civil War Series will be running Hoosiers. as stated, quite a few teams support both 410 and 360 racing in this area. also when the 410 series comes to town, there are usually a few 360 teams that participate. with the new series running a different tire, will that effectivly eliminate the 360 cars from 410 shows and the 410 teams from the weekly 360 shows they would normally run, just because of tire costs and the effort to swap tires on wheels all the time? when you can't run a still race worthy tire that you bought the night before at a race the next night just because it is a different brand it starts to get expensive. that goes against trying to control the costs of racing. i am all for trying to expand racing and develope other series and events and everything and have nothing against any of that. i just wish it could be done in a way that doesn't require needless spending for anyone.

to indy and beyond!!

While the King of the West may turn out to be a good series, I'm a bit concerned about the proposed plans to schedule races throughout the Western US. Way too many of the California 410 racers do so as a hobby, not as a job. Traveling to out-of-state races is, IMO, not an option for the majority of the CA 410 teams. These folks cannot afford the time off from work to travel as much as this series might entail...but do I hope that the series succeeds?

Yep!

But I think that we need to see them on the track at a traveling show before we can decide if it's really viable...

That is one of my concerns as well. Look at how few teams make the Oregon/Washington shows, and they are talking about multiple SouthernCalifornia trips which is just as far for most teams. Not to mention Canada, Vegas, and the other possible dates. But Simpson at least realizes that for that to work there needs to be way more incentive for the teams to go( bigger purse, tow money, discounted hotels) but even with that I think our local teams only have so many of these travel dates in them and it may not be as many as the series wants.
