I was there filming the race. Sure glad that Joey is OK. I talked to him in the pits after his car was taken back to his hauler. He said he was not even sore. He jumped the cushion and had so much speed there was nothing he could do. He hit the fence after clearing the wall. The fence took him to a gradual stop. There was now way to fix it. At least 6 support poles were totally wiped out. I will post what I have on it tomorrow. I did not get the actual flip into the fence but have the aftermath. I must say thanks to Kim Mock and his actions. He was right there when it happened and pulled Joey from the car while it was still on fire. The secondary fence held or the car might have gone a lot further. The Mid-West Safety Team and track personnel did an outstanding job or taking care of the driver and getting the car down. There was no way to continue any type of racing to which all the drivers agreed. Everyone including fans were given a full refund.

Didn't this happen a couple years ago when the IRA showed up too? I remember some track in IL that the IRA doesn't regularly go to had to cancel the races after something similar happened.

Big Daddy E, it happened at Freeport, IL during a heat race, Scott Biertzer crashed on the front stretch and the fence wasn't repairable. The small track was being used as turns 3 & 4 of the big track were not in race condition.

Ah yes, that is right! I remember now. I wasn't there, I just remember people talking about it at the time.
Thank you Ryan.

i was at that race and know a couple of the safety crew members. The big track couldnt be used because of the condition of the fence around the joint. They had gotten rain the night before and the IRA officials said there was no way they could race the track that fast with that bad of a fence. Would not be safe. They had them use the 1/4 mile track inside, which proved even less safe. When the fence came down and they announced they couldnt repair it, they gave us all back $10 of our admission. This came with a chorus of boos, not for the IRA, but for the usual Freeport lack of preparation and planning. Should have been a full refund. But i do remember that night very well.

I still had memories from the previous Freeport/IRA debacle so I was lucky enough not to try again.

You are correct. It wasn't a very popular decision. I even saw people fighting in the stands over it.
