World of Outlaws – Spencer (33 Cars)

Welcome Mat
The 15 Circus travelers along with Sammy, both Madsen brothers, Brad Sweet, and Brooke Tatnell try to hold off locals Mark Dobmeier, Brian Brown, Scott Winters, Austin McCarl, and Davey Heskin.

MIA
TK, Gregg Bakker, Jody Rosenboom, Chad Meyer, Bronson Maeschen, Tony Bruce Jr., Matt Wasmund.

VIP
The same spot as the three previous years over in the GA with Dude_Fan and a few other stragglers.

Time Trials (2 laps each)
Paul McMahan (1st car out) set the standard on a noticeably slicker track than the past three years with a lap at 13.925 seconds around the 3/8 clay oval for an average speed of 96.948 MPH. Sam Hafertepe, Jr. was second quick, Jason Meyers was third quick and picked up a crucial three points to take a single point lead into the rest of the night over Joey Saldana. Lucas Wolfe and Danny Lasoski rounded out the top five. The rest of the order hitting the 16 car heat race inversion: Craig Dollansky, K. Madsen, Swindell, Donny Schatz, Dobmeier, Steve Kinser, I. Madsen, Jac Haudenschild, Toni Lutar, Kraig Kinser, and Brian Brown.

Time Trials Grade: B; Obviously it was best to go out early in the order as the track continued to slick off

Heat 1 Notes: Haud took the lead into turn one riding the cushion with Schatz on him pedaling the bottom. Everyone continued to find the fastest way around in a mainly single-file affair. McMahan smartly didn't force anything since all he had to do was transfer in order to make the dash. Haudenschild picked up his 10th heat win of the year.

Heat 2 Finish: 13 4x 7 15H 2B/ 9 56x 12L 2H

Heat 2 Notes: Dobmeier snatched the lead from Lutar heading into one and put some space between them as Dollansky worked ferociously on Lutar for the last dash spot. Lutar looked impressive as he pulled away from the Big Game Treestands #7 and started making progess towards Dobmeier's Senske & Son #13. Dobmeier would hold on by running his patented high line for his 2nd heat win of the year. Hafertepe Jr. grabbed the other qualifying-time dash spot by transferring while Saldana was out to lunch in the heat, like in time trials, the day his wife welcomed their second son, Ragan, to the world.

Heat 3 Starting Order: 8 Laps

Heat 3 Finish: 11 11K 49 14 59/ 3 (DNF) 63 2

Heat 3 Notes: The father/son front row saw the 20 time champ grab the lead as Meyers moved up to third past K. Madsen. Meyers was all over K. Kinser for the dash spot when K. Madsen brought out the red flag at the halfway point for an unseen flip in the concrete off turn four knocking off the entire front end and bending the frame. He would scratch for the rest of the night. Kemenah was also involved and didn't have enough time to make any repairs so the remaining five cars would transfer to the A. Sweet moved up to third on the restart past Meyers but didn't have enough to run down K. Kinser for second as the elder Kinser won his 17th heat of the year.

Heat 4 Starting Order: 8 Laps

Heat 4 Finish: 1 21 5w 55 23w/ 56 21x 7x (DNF)

Heat 4 Notes: Brown took the lead while as Sammy put a nice slider on I. Madsen for 2nd into turn three on the first lap. Sammy would quickly catch Brown and would grab the lead halfway in into turn one. Wolfe would get by I. Madsen for third at this point as the track continued to widen and slick off.

Heat Grades: C-; Pretty boring, follow-the-leader heat races that have grown to be typical with the Outlaws. The track was really starting to get good heading into the dash and LCS.

Dash Finish/Notes: 11 1 91 15 R19 4x 11K 15H 21 13 (DNF)

Steve took the first lead while Dobmeier was really sideways and fell back to third behind Swindell. McMahan was all over Schatz for 4th as Dobmeier almost passed Swindell coming off the top of turn four for 2nd. Then he would get sideways, again, in turn one with Schatz sneaking by on the bottom for that third spot. One lap later, Dobmeier would hook the cushion in turn one and barrel-roll off the embankment 3-4 times. Amazingly, they would be able to push the car back to the pits and only had to change wings in order for the A.

Following the double-file restart, McMahan would pass Schatz for third and was coming after Swindell for a front row spot but would just run out of time. Steve's dash win was his 4th of the season.

B Feature Finish: 63 9 7K 56x/ 17A 1H 12L 21x (DNF) 56 7x 2 2H 3 (DNS)

B Feature Grade/Notes: B-; Kemenah led early with Saldana quickly jumping up to the second spot. Behind them, Cressman spins out (wake me if you haven't seen/read that before) with all hell breaking loose behind them. Blandford rolled once, Ingle getting on his lid, and McCarl getting on his side. McCarl would change a nose wing, while Ingle and Blandford retired.

Everybody would get a lap in while, you guessed it, Cressman spun off of turn four! Thinking/hoping this was his second yellow (and later remembering the WoO doesn't have this rule) so he would be done, but he would join the back of the field. Brink spun on lap four with Cressman having nowhere to go but into him with Brink getting upside down. Both cars would be done. Saldana and Kemenah would wage a great battle for the meaningless LCS win with Kemenah nicking Saldana's Budweiser #9 at the line for the win. Wolfgang and Heskin would snatch the last two transfer positions leaving A-Mac one spot short of making his first career WoO A Main. The track was slicking off through the middle with two grooves coming into play for the A.

Notes: S. Kinser took a commanding lead as he charged toward lapped traffic. I was trying to follow the WoO portable scoreboard for the lap counter, but was hard with the Mules infront of it throughout, so all laps are guesstimates. Schatz and McMahan battled hard again for third, even touching wheels. Haud and Dobmeier were the only two up front using the cushion, and using it effectively as they charged to the front. Haud made his way to 4th by lap six with Dobmeier getting by four cars to 6th when the King hit traffic on lap six.

A lap or two later, Haud made his way up to third and challenged Sammy for second but had to check up on his slider for a spinning Tatnell directly infront of him at the halfway point. The restart had S. Kinser leading ahead of Sammy, Haud, Schatz, Dobmeier, and McMahan. Saldana is saved by the slider as he is the last car on the lead lap at this point.

The double file restart (love these by the way) had Steve grabbing another commanding lead. Haudesnchild was able to fend of Schatz on the bottom to hold onto the third spot but Schatz hung with it and was able to grab that spot with 12 to go. McMahan and Sides were able to get by Dobmeier during this time on the restart while Winters was shuffled back after moving up a few spots in the middle of the pack. Brown would spin on this lap in turn three.

Another double-file restart was on tap with Steve still leading Sammy, Schatz, Haud, and McMahan. Steve got on the throttle early (as stated he can get on the gas anytime) just past turn three and would get another big lead. Schatz challenged Sammy for second but came up short. Meanwhile, Lasoski would spin in the same spot as his nephew in turn three with Gregg spinning to avoid drilling him. The order stayed the same, but the next restart would be single-file since a lap did not get completed.

A couple laps would get in the books when Haud decided to rocket to the front. He made one helluva move with nine to go as he went high of turn two past Schatz for third, and then dived by Sammy on the bottom of the backstretch to get second into turn three! The Wild Child would quickly catch Steve for the lead and would grab the lead up top off of turn four to the delight of the huge crowd with eight to go officially. Everyone moved up to the top after watching Haud blow by them for their position. Steve was able to catch Haud in traffic as the white flag was in the air, but Haud disposed of a lapper and went out to grab the fan favorite victory! It was his 4th of the year with the WoO (5th for the team), 2nd win in Iowa on the year, 55th career WoO win, and was worth 10 large.

Lap Leaders: S. Kinser 1-22, Haudenschild 23-30

A Feature Grade: A; Great excitement (again) this year with this race. It wasn't a last lap battle like last year, but it was exciting nonetheless with Haud supplying most of that excitement.

FOAW: Dobmeier was damn fast tonight. Had he finished the dash he may have been upfront with Haud challenging with the lead since he was the other guy up on the risky cushion.

Crowd Pleasing Moment #1: The move Haud put on fellow Hall of Famer Swindell and future Hall of Famer Schatz down the backstretch to move from 4th to 2nd.

Crowd Pleasing Moment #2: Good to hear the "Go Jac Go!" chant accompanied by the Haud whistles after not hearing it for a long, long time!

WTF: Is Cressman ever going to be able to hang onto his car without spinning out infront of everybody? His spin out count has to be in the double digits this year alone and it probably costed A-Mac a trip to the A.

"WoO BS Move of the Night": Amazingly enough, a completely clean night from the Outlaws with no mistakes.

Mulligan Moment: T-Mac chucking a t-shirt at yours truly from close proximity as I was writing notes down on the BlackBerry. It narrowly missed my head. A heads up would be appreciated next time, but the kids behind us did enjoy the shirts!

Head Scratcher: Most MN bars close down at 1, and gas stations are incapable of selling beer. Unbelievable how sad that is!

Thumbs Up: "Thank you very much Johnny." "That'll wrap it up down here in victory lane." Love it.

Thumbs Down: The machinery that was torn up. Too much torn up, and too long of a night at the track for a one class show.

Prime Mover: Saldana was the KSE Hard Charger moving 21st to 11th. Winters also moved up nicely by going 19th to 13th.

Trophy Queen Grade: A+; The Big Game Girls add some "excitement" to victory lane from previous years when there wasn't any here at Spencer. They earned their money last night by wearing skirts in the 50-something degree weather.

Closing Stat of the Night: Meyers only gains seven points on Saldana after a horrible qualifying run from Joey. Meyers' point lead is five over Saldana, and 44 over Steve into tonight's chilly-ass race at Deer Creek.

On Tap: I am taking the night off, as is the 23w, to spend some quality time at Buckshots up here in the BFD. We'll be coming back at 'ya Sunday with a 5PM start at Huset's for the Baete Forseth $5K Challenge with the final Report of the season. Hope everyone stays warm tonight at DC!

Curious as to what happened to Sides at the end? He was running 6th on the last yellow and at the end he was like 18th. Was hoping he would get a great finish.
