4TH ANNUAL “OKLAHOMA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP” AT OSP SATURDAY!

by John Lemon

Tulsa, Oklahoma (September 13, 2010) – The time of year has arrived to determine which sprint car driver is the “Best of the Best” and this Saturday night, at the 4/10 mile Oklahoma Sports Park in Ada Oklahoma, the fourth annual “Oklahoma State Championship” sanctioned by the Oil Capitol Racing Series, will find an answer to that very question.

The “Oklahoma State Championship” event was created to bring the best sprint car drivers from throughout Oklahoma, place them in an arena to compete in and let them wage battle like warriors to determine who is truly the best of the best. Tulsa’s Mike Goodman won the distinction of being the state champ in the inaugural running of the 'OSC' in 2007 with Danny Smith of Sand Springs second and current OCRS points leader Jamie Passmore third.

2008 saw Smith capture the OSC title with Norman’s Danny Jennings in second and Owasso’s Matt Sherrell third. The third annual running of the OSC in 2009 was an "instant classic" that had race fans standing in earnest as the cars came to the finish line. They witnessed Andy Shouse of Oklahoma City nipping Mr. Jennings at the stripe by a wheel to take his first OSC trophy back home adding to his collection of other career accomplishments. This is one event on the OCRS schedule that sprint car teams everywhere circle on their calendars as a “must do” event.

Saturday night will mark the third appearance in 2010 for the OCRS sprinters at promoter George Welch’s ‘Sports Park’ facility. Goodman took the checkers in the June running of the second annual “Harold Leep Jr. Memorial” race. Passmore found victory lane at OSP approximately one month later.

Spectator gates will open at 5pm with racing set to begin at 7:30pm. OCRS drivers meeting will take place at 6:30 with hot laps starting immediately after the drivers meeting.

Oklahoma Sports Park is located just 10 miles west of Ada on State Highway 3.

OCRS NOTES:

Long Time Waiting: Goodman won the latest OCRS event held at Outlaw Motor Speedway in Oktaha last Friday night. In doing so, he won his first main event since the “Harold Leep Jr. Memorial” race the last time OCRS visited OSP. He also snapped Jamie Passmore’s string of consecutive wins. Passmore had won three straight (Thunderbird, Tri-State and Mid-America Speedways).

In Rhythm: 17 year old Shayla Waddell has collected back to back top fives for the first time in OCRS competition. She was 5th at Mid-America on 9/4 then improved to a 4th last Friday at OMS. The 88s team seems to be in full rhythm now. Keep an eye on this young lady as she really gives the boys a run for their money.

Door Kicking: 16 year old Kyle Clark equaled his best OCRS finish with a runner up finish at OMS Friday night. He also performed the feat back on July 24th at West Siloam Speedway. Clark, a second year driver, is bound to kick in the door of that first victory very soon.

Perfect Attendance: There have been 19 OCRS tour stop events to date this season. To this point, seven drivers have competed in all of them. They include: Jamie Passmore, Rafe Essary, Travis Jenkins, Fred Mattox, Shayla Waddell, Tim Kent and Kyle Clark.

Countdown to 100: There have been 86 different drivers that have participated in OCRS sprint car competition in 2010. It is anticipated that OCRS will break the century mark before the season is over as OCRS did in 2009.

Previous OCRS winners @ OSP:

5/19/07: Mike Goodman

7/14/07: Chris Burns

9/22/07: Mike Goodman

5/31/08: Mike Goodman

5/30/09: Frank Dittman

9/19/09: Andy Shouse

6/12/10: Mike Goodman

7/10/10: Jamie Passmore

Current OCRS TOP TEN:

1) Jamie Passmore: 1645

2) Mike Goodman: 1368

3) Rafe Essary: 1366

4) Danny Smith: 1214

5) Travis Jenkins: 1206

6) Fred Mattox: 1084

I believe Joe Bob Lee from Lawton is coming ,that is what he told me earlier in the week, sure both Sellers will be there as well, have not heard of any others.

But maybe others with more info can tell us if they know of any others.

I'm more excited than JD at a sweet tea convention. Or catpuppy at an all orange and black esprint nationals. Or Mossman at a Gastineau tailgate before OU-TX. Or Mr. Enid Speedway at an IMCA sanctioned sport mod event. Or Robert Sellers at boot camp! And I might as well put me at a burrito stand watching people get teched.
