On this the ninth anniversary of the attacks on the US, we should all take a moment to remember what happened on that horrible day. Every one of our lives changed that day. As bad as things may be sometimes, we are more than lucky to live in this great country. And on September 11, 1976 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Jan Opperman was involved in a crash that caused him a serious head injury. Jan was never the same after that. So tonight, while I stand proudly for our National Anthem at Port Royal Speedway, there will be a tear in my for all those we lost on this tragic day.

A very sad day in racing history. I miss Jan still, as well as his later epic battles with Kenny Weld.

It's OK for everybody to move on with their lives, but we should remember 9-11 and the sacrifices and pain to many families as we enjoy this Saturday's college football or auto racing. It was a strange feeling looking up at the clear blue sky here in the Midwest on 9-11 and they were empty, when the jets from several large cities usually fill the sky. It's difficult to understand sometimes that there are people in the world that have that much hate to do these things. Good reminder Freddy, enjoy the races.

Your right it is hard to understand the hate that people would have to kill innocent men, women and children and cause the suffering that is connected with these attacks. Its also hard to understand why anyone would want to build or support the building of a monument to the attackers at or around ground zero site.

I'm sure as hell not getting into a 'political' or opinion-based debate in this thread about what is or isn't, or should or shouldn't be built.
What I AM going to say though is that I feel this day should mean as much or more to Americans as a whole than almost any other day in our country's history. The signing of the Declaration of Independence is likely our brightest shining moment, but 9-11 could possibly be the most important day in our history in the last 225 years. Pearl Harbor, while cowardly and epic, was a military attack on our military force, even though it took place on our "soil", and in my opinion can't compare to the attacks on the WTC towers, which killed over 2800 civilians. The attacks on September 11th had NO military provocation whatsoever like Pearl Harbor, D Day, Viet Nam, etc. had. And I really hope that no single American ever EVER forgets what happened on this day 9 years ago, and what it meant to our country and to us individually as US citizens.
That being said, 9-11 has other significance to me personally on a different front being that it's also the day I lost a personal, long-time friend in Donnie Adams. Rest in peace my friend.

I am from Canada and will never forget what happened that day. Saw the second jet go into the building on TV. I cannot say how I feel, because I will be banned for life from this site. You all know how I feel.
