NCRA Southern Modified Feature to Cross in Amarillo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Amarillo, Texas – August 28, 2010 - Veteran modified driver Kelly Cross scored one for the locals as he took the lead with four laps to go and then cruised to victory as the O'Reilly/NCRA southern modified division made their first ever appearance at Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas on Saturday night.

By virtue of picking up the most passing points during heat race action, Patt McNabb started on the pole for the thirty lap feature and quickly took the lead as the green flag fell. Third starting Cross over took outside front row starter Nathan Dodson for the runner up position and was glued to the leaders bumper during the opening laps.

A lap four caution for a Neil Debord spin in turn two would slow the pace but once racing action resumed, it was still a two car battle with McNabb and Cross putting distance on the rest of the field with Cross continuing to hound the leader throughout the early stages of the race.

It remained that way at the races midway point while behind them, Seth Pruett, Doug Gillespie and Dodson battled for positions three through five.

Despite Edmond, Oklahoma driver Todd Decker's spin on the original start of the feature finale, the race looked to go the entire distance caution free but with five laps to go, Humberto Rocha got crossed up coming out of turn four. Tommy Bohnstedt had nowhere to go and collected Rocha, ending the night for both drivers.

On the final restart it appeared it was time for Cross to make his move as he paced the McNabb for a couple of laps before diving down low in turns three and four and driving underneath the leader down the front stretch to take the lead with four laps to go.

From there it was all Cross as the Amarillo veteran went the rest of the way unchallenged to take his first ever NCRA feature victory in front of the hometown fans. McNabb would settle for second while Pruett came home third. Gillespie finished in the fourth division while Dodson held on to round out the top five.

Current series points leader Dustin Buntin of Wheatland, Oklahoma was the series' top finisher as he came home sixth from his eleventh starting position.

Local Austin Jumod, who finished second in the second "B" feature, was the races hard charger as he started eighteenth and came home seventh.

It was a tough night for Enid, Oklahoma driver Kevin Snow. Snow, who came into the night second in the O'Reilly/NCRA southern modified point standings, blew a motor after finishing third in his heat race. He was scheduled to start seventh in the feature but was scratched for the evening.

The officials and staff of the O'Reilly/NCRA southern modified division would like to give special thanks to Ramirez Motorsports out of Woodward, Oklahoma and DIRT Performance Parts and Tires out of Enid for their partnership with the series in assisting several of the series regulars for their trip to Route 66 Motor Speedway.

The National Championship Racing Association would like to thank the following for their contribution and involvement with the southern modifieds for 2010: O'Reilly Auto Parts, Hoosier Racing Tire, Sunoco Race Fuels, Ramirez Motorsports and DIRT Performance Parts and Tires

The series would like to thank the following contingency partners with the southern mods for the 2010 race season. Arizona Sports Shirts, Bassett Wheels, DIRT Performance Parts and Tires, Hooker Harness, Pro Shocks, Racing Optics, Saldana Racing Products, Taylor Cable Products, The Joie of Seating and Ultra Shield.
