In order to add more fuel to the tire debate, i have a hypothetical question for everyone. Lets say the WOO announced next year that any driver could run any tire. Lets say it was a proven fact that the Goodyear tire was slightly faster than the Hoosier, but was proven to have a higher chance of a failure than the Hoosier. Which tire do you think the top dollar teams would run? What tire do you think the low budget teams would run?
Once again, this is a totally hypothetical question, not based on any data.
My opinion is that all teams that could afford new tires every night would take their chances and try to get every tenth of a second and run the goodyear and the low dollar teams would run hoosiers. But when it came nationals time, they would all be running Goodyears.
Just my thought. what do you think.

And, you are assuming the GY is better than the brand H tire?
I think EVERY car out there, regardless of price, would run the tire they felt would do the job.
Even one from Pep Boys!

Do the job as in best chance to win the race or best chance to finish? I know what you are saying, but i am trying to play the devil's advocate here. IF the Goodyears were proven to be a faster, yet more fragile tire, I think every one would run them, much the way most drivers will take a more powerfull motor versus one with gas mileage and better reliability.
in no way am i saying Goodyear is faster, just saying what if. would the drivers value the faster speed, or longevity.

Sorry.
"Do the job" (to me) implies winning...or being in the front.

I hear what you're asking, but there are still too many variables in your question.
Short 1/4 mile; maybe the "faster" tire.
Huge, fast, 1/2 mile; safety and the old "in order to finish first, first you must finish."
I don't think anybody in their right mind would run a questionable tire. I'd rather finish 5th every night than to win one and then get torn up from defective equipment. Not to mention the risk of getting hurt or killed.

I see your points, and they are very valid. I dont, however, feel that any driver would have been content with "in order to finish first, you must first finish". (maybe just chasing points) I think we can all agree that Schatz, Kinser, and Saldana had some very serious horsepower coming from their powerplants on Saturday night, trying to win the big 50th. But I also think they sacrificed the reliability to get those ponies. I think most drivers would do the same for any component on their car if it made them even 1% better than anyone else. They would take the chance at failure for a chance at victory.
P.S.--been to alot of sprint car races and i dont think anyone who straps into one of those cars in in their right mind!! HA HA!!

Uh, the PA track(Williams Grove) is a Goodyear track; and since the WoO requires Goodyears, it's kind of a moot point... they all will be using Goodyears.........

Well first off all the big teams will have tire deals so they will run whichever tire sponsors them. I highly doubt the GY's will be faster than the Hoosiers, racier yes but faster no. If there's no compound rules or limit to the number of times you can change tires. The teams will run the softest compound they think they can get away with. Most will gamble. Some will win, some will lose, some are going to sing the blues but we'll surely see more flat tires, not less.
It will be intersting to see who runs what at selinsgrove and intersting to see how the racing stacks up. The first 2 410 races at selinsgrove were the best 410 A mains that track has had in years, even on a dry slick surface.

Excellent point on the big teams running whichever tire sponsers them. You also made my point when you stated it doesnt matter who's tire it is, they are going to run the softest compound they can get away with. In other words, if it is a 30 lap race they will run a compound that they feel will make it 31 laps. I know Sammy's interview wasnt shown on the speed replay, but he was very critical of Goodyear in the interview (indirectly). I still think he would have pushed the envelope no matter what. He just plain drives the pi$$ out of his tires!! Was fun to watch though.
