With 600 to 900 horsepower, sprint cars can be a handful to handle. For Isaac Schreurs, that's certainly the case. He was paralyzed from the chest down in a dirt bike accident in 2005. But needing a wheelchair didn't keep him from getting into the driver's seat.
The story continues here with video:

Following the win, he also had a chance to talk on the phone with Brad Doty about the accomplishment and the hand controls in the car.

Isaac's an amazing young man. I'm sure he will be successful in any endeavor in his life and will most likely accomplish more than most of us who have use of our legs.
He graduated from high school a semester early and immediately enrolled in a tech school where he graduated with a GPA of just under 4.0 this summer. For most of the time that he raced at Huset's on Sunday nights, he would leave after racing and drive to school in Minneapolis (about 4 hours) and was never late for his 7:30 class on Monday morning.
I'm sure Isaac will be a lot more successful in sprint car racing once they figure out a better brake control. While he operates the steering wheel-mounted throttle with his right thumb, his brake is a separate lever - like an emergency brake - to the left. You can only imagine what it must be like trying to steer and operate the throttle with one hand while using the other for the brake.

We have a driver in Sydney Australia which is also in a wheel chair
He came third in the Australian Lighting Sprintcar Title recently and is a very handy racer and has adapted well.
Congratulations to the young driver and wish him luck in further meetings.

Isaac has pre-registered for the Jackson Nationals Friday and Saturday nights in Jackson, Mn. He has raced at Jackson several times this summer and has shown well for himself there. Come to Jackson this weekend, watch and meet an amazing young man.

Great story and I'm glad he got a win.
I was wondering how they had the throttle and brake setup.
I kinda figured they would have set it up more like motorcycle handle bars with the throttle on one side and the brake on the other. Maybe there isn't enough room for handle bars though.

I was curious if anyone was going to post something on this driver, I was roming the pits sunday night and happened to see Isaac in his pit , "ya, no biggy, a guy in a wheelchair" I thought, after second look, ? sure enuff ! , he is wearing a drivers suit ! so I went over and had to check out his car to see how they came up with the controls to operate the machine, I had a short visit with one of the crew bid my farewell and wished them luck . After watching the most close racing I can remember at the Nationals my weekend was topped off by a emotional win in a limited sprint class ! , huh, quite impressive ! I congratulated Isaac later that eavening. He made a deep impression that will last a lifetime, Im just glad I was able to attend the night that belonged to Isaac... heres to many more!
