SHRYOCK SWEEPS IOWA-MISSOURI BORDER WAR, WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT MAIN EVENT
By Brian Neal

MEMPHIS, Mo. (April 21) -- Fertile, Iowa's Kelly Shryock made it five wins in a row Saturday when he picked up the 35-lap Holly "A" Main win at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo. It was the third straight National Event victory for the eight-time defending O'Reilly USMTS national champ, who also captured the last two USMTS Southern Series races at the end of March.

Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Gilmar, Iowa's Richie Gustin Jr. drew the front row for the main event, with Myer edging out Gustin for the top spot on the opening lap. Myer held the lead until lap 4, when Shryock jumped to his outside to grab the top spot.

Shryock built up a five-car-length advantage over second place before the first of six cautions came out on lap 11 for a spin in turn 2 by Colcord, Okla.'s Jason Hughes. On the restart, Shryock once again grabbed the top spot, with seventh-starting Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, now challenging him for the lead.

The second caution of the night came out on lap 13 when defending Pepsi Scotland County Speedway track champion Ryan Meyer of Liberty, Ill., spun in turn 2. Shryock again took the lead on the restart, with Hejna and Michael Long of Quincy, Ill., battling it out for second. Five laps later the yellow flag once again waved over the speedway with a spin in turn 2 by Jake Durbin of Perry, Iowa.

On the restart, Shryock again took the lead while Hejna and Long continued to wage a war for second. But the field was slowed once again on lap 21, when Long clipped a tire in turn 2 and spun his machine, ending his great run up front. One lap later the yellow flag appeared again for a tangle in turn 4 between Alan Mondus of Lakeville, Minn., Durbin and Martell, Neb.'s Brent Bohmont.

Shryock once again took the top spot on the restart, with Hejna and Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., battling for second. The sixth and final caution of the night appeared on lap 24 for Meyer's second spin, ending his night.

Once the green flag was waved, Shryock pulled away to pick up his fifth consecutive main event win of the 2007 season. Burgtorf held off Hejna for the battle for second, while New Sharon, Iowa's Zack VanderBeek worked his way from 13th to finish in fourth. Fellow New Sharon driver Brad Pinkerton charged from 23rd to round out the top-5, earning him the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

Myer slipped back to a sixth place finish, with Tommy Weder Jr. of Woodward, Okla., coming home in seventh. Dustin Boney of Tonganoxie, Kan., took home an eighth-place finish, with 16th-place starter Donovan Lodge of Moline, Ill., coming home in ninth. Fifteen-year-old rookie sensation Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown also took home another top-10 finish.

The four 10-lap heat races went to Burgtorf, Hejna, Tony Fraise of Donnellson, Iowa, and Long. Ryan Gustin and VanderBeek each claimed a win in the 15-lap Real Racing Wheels "B" Mains.

Shryock holds the top spot in the Central Region standings with 321 points earned in three events. VanderBeek is second with 269, followed by Lodge (241), Pinkerton (239) and Ryan Gustin (214). The remaining Central Region schedule looks like this:

All three events will pay $2,000 to win and a minimum $200 to start. Sponsored by Rinehart Trucking of Porter, Texas, drivers will also be battling for a three-race points fund worth $500 to first place, $300 to second and $200 for third to the highest points earners over the course of the weekend.

The O'Reilly USMTS National Event grind will give drivers a well-deserved break with more than a month off duty before returning for a five-track, five-race swing through Minnesota over Memorial Day Weekend:
