Krysl56k is the Kings Royal a sprint? Its 40 laps? At what lap does it change from a sprint to ?. Not sure I get the logic but I still think a 20 minute, 50 lap feature is a sprint. What is the magic number of laps to keep it sprint car racing. I say traditionally at Knoxville its been 30 laps but I haven't minded either year , 40 or 50 laps. I think 40 laps with a larger fuel cell would be perfect. 40 gallon tank.

If its got a scheduled pit stop its not a "sprint" car race.
Does the Kings Royal have a scheduled pit stop?
40 laps at Eldora is not the same distance as 40 laps at Knoxville, not even close.
I really don't care how many laps a "sprint" car race is as long as it is reasonably possible that the cars can finish the race without needing a pit stop for fuel or tires.
Meaning that for a 50 lap race they should be carrying 60+ green flag laps worth of fuel.

In the early 70's they had 100 lappers on the mile at the Missouri State Fair every year. If memory serves me correctly, they had to make 2 fuel stops, but they weren't done as a red flag. They actually made pit stops. They later dropped it to 50 laps, and now the mile track no longer exists (boo hiss!!! It's a shame they destroyed it.)
I also watched a 500 lapper at Golden Gate Speedway in Tampa in the late 70's. It was interesting, but hard to keep track of who was running where with all the pit stops. I had no doubt that Bobby Allen had won, but he finished second. Don Mack was the winner.
Guess my point is that sprint cars are designed for shorter, sprint type, races, but there are always exceptions to the rule. As for the Nationals, I think 30 is too short. What's the Nationals 30 lap record? Like 9 minutes and change? Pretty quick for the biggest race of the year. I like the 40 lap idea, but would rather see it with no fuel stops. Solution? Some of you keep talking about tradition, so how about go with tradition and put sprint car tanks back on the sprint cars.

That was before my time but I would like to thank you for pointing out there were always a few exceptions to the "sprint" race. Why not have one for the nationals. Hell, its the nationals!! Why have it have the same amount of laps as a normal outlaw show at a half mile track? It's only the biggest sprint car race of the entire year!!
