Ok so I hear alot of debate about 30 or 50 laps and I guess Im in the minority but I don't care either way. I have been going to the Nationals since 80' and they aren't a handful of them better than Saturday nights if any. I hear people say it broke tradition. I believe the fully inverted heats need to come back though. That is what made it virtually impossible and made the heat races great. I don't know why you go to sprint car races but I do because:

A. Its done all in one night, time trials and etc.

B. I love the format, Ie time trials, heat races and features. Nascrap could take a page of the sprinters book and it would make Nascrap so much more exciting.

and Finally C. The side by side, slide jobs and overall racing.

I don't go to the races to see who gets the best fuel mileage, who can change tires faster but I don't care if race 50 or 30 lap either. I love sprint car racing either way. I don't think the fuel stop but a damper on anything, but I would like larger fuel tanks so we can get some laps in. If not maybe limit the amount of crew members and shorten up the time frame. You can't do all the much in 5mins anyway. I was afraid we would see some sandbaggers but I don't recall anyone plus with more laps it gives a guy a chance from the rear of the field, ie Dollansky.

I know some of you think its "Sprint" Car racing and it should be a sprint. Isn't 50 laps which happens to equal 25 miles a sprint? 20 minutes maybe if no cautions and with a fuel stop. I don't see the big deal because I like the actually driving on the track not the other stuff. I wish they could 50 without stopping but if that is the only way then I will take it in a heartbeat especially if turns out like Saturdays feature. Wow its Monday and I am still pumped, what a race. Thank you Knoxville for a great 8 days of racing.

I hope they go back to 30 but the 50 on the 50th was awesome. Not one boring lap. I do think the tires are as much of a problem as fuel. Put on a bigger tank and I'm not sure a hard tire would last 50 laps either due to heat as much as wear. It was a keck of a 50 but I'd vote for 30 as the norm. There have still been some that have come from the B to the top 5 in 30 laps... Dude, Hodnett, Jeff Swindell, Wolfie, Dollanski and I'm sure several more.

Sammy would be the number one voter for 30 laps.

Mccoy said they can make 50 laps with a 33 gal. fuel cell. Next year the outlaws and making it a rule to have a 33 gal fuel cell. So look for another 50 lapper!!!

If it was a 30 lap race, it would have been a great one too, it was fixing to really heat up when they threw the yellow @ 25.

i was listening to the race and i wondered why they yellowed it when it sounded like things were heating up. i wondered why they didn't let it go to at least lap 30 and if a yellow or red came out, then they wouldn't have had to stop the race artificially. i bet sammy wishes the second half had been five laps shorter! nice to see tim and the team get the big one. you know they can use it.

Saldana probably wishes last year's was 30 instead of 40, too. My guess is they will go back to 40.

I think the reason for the lap 25 yellow/red was that in the driver's meeting, they made it clear that they didn't want any fuel stops other than the scheduled one...

I think they did then because they didnt want things to get very heated up, alot of slidejobs and such. they didnt want to stop it in the middle of intense racing and didnt want someone to blow a tire right before the stop. So they stopped it just as it was heating up. I mean it would have been real crappy if schatz or sammy blew a tire that early. well i take that back, i would have cheered if schatz would have.

In every meeting I attended, they never stated that there was a "window" for the "pit stop".

30 laps, Knoxville Nationals was a tradition, and they all ran 30 laps until last year and this year. Cappy shouldn't mess with tradition, I don't think.

But we knew there would be one and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to guess it when might fall in a 50-lap race. This is not a pit stop sport. Pick a lap number that fits the parameters of a sprint car, 30-40, and stick with it.

Enough wondering. When they decided to do 50 laps this year I was mad so I called Cappy himself. I don't always agree with Cappy but he did a great job of explaining himself. 1st of all, he told me that only himself and John McCoy knew what lap they were going to stop. They had decided that along time ago. 2nd he told me that they can barely make 30 laps on fuel. He said that every year the cars have more and more horsepower which requires more fuel. On a 30 lap race with a few yellows guys would be getting very close with fuel. Their best guess tells them that they are burning almost a gallon a lap. I still am not big on 50 laps but with the way this year turned out I have no doubt that it will be that way next year. Like it or not get used to it.

The drivers were told during the 4-wide parade lap that there would be a caution after lap 25...no one decided "during" the race...

Well I remember everyone complaining back in 2003 about there not being enough laps during the features on Sat. for anyone to make any big moves. I remember proposing back then for the A to be 40 laps or more and add some additional laps to the B on down. If they go back to 30 laps I won't even consider going back for the Nats. or at least stay for Sat. night.

Just curious did they not prep the track any before the A on Sat.? It looked like the it was in pretty good shape.

How far back on tradition do you want to go. The race would be non wing run what you brung

This thing was not born a wing race. How many laps was that?

I do not know a lot of people that would want to run this one over again at 30 laps.I think they will leave it as is. Lots of comments of can't wait to get back

All you need is about 6 mil and you can have your own and do it like you want.

O you might need to build a track first that will hold that many people

If they keep it 30 to 35 laps they should be able to run all laps with out a fuel stop, but anything over that we will have to sit though a fuel stop. I kind of liked the 50 lap race but it really was only 2 25 lap races.

Petey - They didn't prep the track before the "A". The track was awesome every night I was there. The Saturday day show was as expected for modern day cars...

Get back to 30!!! Okay I have to admit that this year it turned out for the better (Schatz didnt win) but 50 laps ISNT A SPRINT!!! Sprint cars are suppose to race sprint races. Not endurance events! The first 25 laps was basically for starting position. It acted almost as a scramble. I personally thought the idea was stupid from the beginning. It was just not sprint car racing. Get back to 30!!!!!!!!
I'd rather be in Knoxville.
