Being a big fan of Wolfgangs I always cheered against Steve and Sammy growing up with my cousins which made the rivalry more exciting of the Big 3 because the Wolf did everything but hang on the moon in my mind. But sad as it was when Wolfie bowed out I found myself cheering for Kinser and Swindell because they represented that era with the Wolf that sadly I dont think will ever be duplicated. Last night at 35 I can honestly say I felt just as emotional in the stands as I did watching Wolfgang run the alpahabet years ago with that same intensity. My Dad who was with said it reminded him of the excitement in the stands when Dick Gaines passed Opperman on the last corner to take the nationals years ago. I am very happy Shaffer took the checkers its someone new to the podium and a great guy, I felt for Sammy last night and thought it was awesome that he climbed the car in disgust to kinda gesture to the crowd that this would of for sure been the year and he even took a theatric bow in the pits to the crowd I have never in my years of racing hearing so many people cheering for him it was awesome to hear em chant SAMMY! and the crowd around him after was awesome. I would compare SAMMY at the moment to FAVRE on not making the superbowl last year after such a kick ass season. But thats what makes sprint car racing exciting you never know till the checkers fly, hats off to the 50th perhaps one of the most exciting nationals I can remember in my 30 years of going to the nationals. Its gonna be hard to top this years finish

Thanks for sharing your thoughts dsmpizzadude! I am a bit too young to remember Wolfie but I agree with the crowd's tribute to Sammy and putting a new guy on the top of the podium. That was the most exciting Nationals A Main I have watched!
I'm pretty sure I frequented your place when I was in high school at Lincoln, I graduated in 05. Now that I live in Knoxville I hope to drag my boyfriend to Corigliano's soon. Such a cool place for a sprint car fan growing up on the south side of DSM. :-)

Thank you, yeah that was a good one for sure still having a good time rubbing it into the friends that decided not to go I know the tape will show the racing but dont think you can capture that magic that was in the air last night on anything. Lincoln high school was alot of fun for our 10 years we are actually in the process of moving back to the south side of dsm with a short stint of having a downtown pizza joint gotta go back to the roots And actually almost had a deal struck to serve pizza next to the Dingus in Darnells gas station but timing didnt work out for the nats, but dont be surprised to see a regular saturday night pizza joint after the races to pop up in knox they have been serving our frozens at the bar till our move

Yes the atmosphere of actually being there cannot be described! I am glad it wasn't shown live on SPEED cuz we can rub it in and tell our stories for 2 weeks before anyone else gets to see it! Pretty amazing night!!
I didn't even know you guys weren't by Lincoln anymore. I thought when I drove by recently a sign was still up. I actually work on the southside but live in Kville. I would love to see your pizza out here! Yummy stuff!! We will keep our eyes peeled!! Loved when you guys sponsored Lynton. I actually have a picture from then as my desktop right now.

Next year should be even better, I heard from "A VERY RELIABLE SOURCE" that next year they are going to stop the race every 10 to 12 laps to change tires, set ups, and add fuel. There is even some talk about stopping it long enough to allow crews to change motors if they want.

Absolutely everyone around us was hugging, high fiveing, shaking hands & screaming & hollering! It was a great time to be alive and I feel bad for any Sprint Car fan that was not there to be a part of it....
My compassion goes out to Sammy for such a stellar run only to have bad luck strike him down again.
Congratulations for the win & Thank You for the memory Tim Shaffer

The hair on the back of my neck was standing up when the whole crowd was chanting Sammy Sammy. Also when Shaffer won it this super drunk guy next to me was crying like a 3 year old with a skinned knee. It was a very emotional night. Best sprint car race I have ever seen.
