Tickets - although it's the 50th anniversary, you should be able to buy something from a scalper.
Hotel - probably something available in NW Des Moines....the State Fair used to be same week as the Nationals...

you will still be able to get tickets at the ticket window, and no seat is a bad seat in my eyes

You may check Newton, Pella, or Indianola for a hotel.

Should be hotels in Des Moines, if your only going for one night the drive to Knoxville isn't bad. And as others said I'd see if about getting tickets cheaper out front before going to the ticket booth..my brother and I always get our tickets out front now usually for half the ticket window price.

If you're wanting a room for just Saturday night, I'd even try Knoxville motels. A lot of people head out after the races and don't stay Saturday night, although it may be a package deal and have to reserve/pay for all 4 nights even though they don't stay Saturday night. Still might be worth a try. Worked for me at Daytona several years ago. Sunday night of the 500 stopped at a Howard Johnson's just down the street from the track and asked, "Don't suppose there'd be a chance in hell of getting a room tonight?" Her reply, "Sure sweetie, we have plenty of rooms. Most head home when the race is over."
As far as tickets, don't think there will be problem. We usually have some to get rid of, but so far everyone is still planning on going.

I booked my hotel last Sunday night. Choices are few. Not many rooms available in Des Monies. Don't wait any longer. Do it now.

Don't feed the scalpers The are easy to spot and that does't help the racer or the track
