Calistoga Speedway Hosts Civil War Sprint Cars For Battle of the North Bay

Petaluma Hosts Series Friday Night for Rare Back to Back Races

Calistoga……The premier traveling series for "360" sprint cars will bring a tight five-way battle for the championship on a two day tour of the North Bay area this weekend, with Calistoga Speedway hosting the Civil War Sprint Car Series on Saturday night.

The series will race at Petaluma Speedway, on the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds, Friday night, marking the only time this season that the series has run back to back races in the North Bay area.

Two drivers who have won a combined six Civil War titles, Andy Forsberg of Auburn and Sean Becker of Oroville, lead the championship chase, but are being hounded by three drivers looking to claim their first championship in the series.

Four time champion Forsberg, who won at Petaluma two weeks ago, is clinging to only a fingernail-thin one point lead over two time titleholder Sean Becker after spinning off the track and finishing far down in the field last weekend at Placerville as Sacramento driver Herman Klein and Becker closed in on him by finishing second and fourth respectively.

"The Civil War championship battle is so close that any one night could determine who wins it," said Forsberg. "But I don’t care if this would be my fifth or my 19th championship, when you’re in the points lead, you go for it."

Becker, the only driver to also win a title in the prestigious Golden State Challenge Series for "410" sprint cars, is looking for his own claim in the record books. "There have been back to back winners before, but nobody has won the Civil War championship three years in a row," he said. "We struggled earlier this year, but we went back to our chassis from last year and now we have momentum on our side."

Klein, who won earlier this year at Placerville, has quietly hovered close to the points lead with consistent finishes. "As long as we finish each race in the top five and don’t get any DNFs, we have a shot at it," said Klein, who led the series’ point standings in the first half of last year before getting sidelined with car trouble.

In all, approximately 30 of the top "360" sprint car teams, including many who race every week at Petaluma, are expected on the high speed half mile oval in Calistoga on the Napa County Fairgrounds.

A full race card is set for Saturday, including heat races, a semi "last chance" main event and a 25 lap main event, with qualifying set for 6:30.
