Almost 30 years ago Steve Kinser won his very first of 12 Knoxville Nationals. In 1980 I was a young photographer then who took photos only during hot laps and time trials and then headed for the grandstand to enjoy the races.
Here is an album of almost 60 shots from that weekend. I shot all these on slides and my scanner does not do the best job, but I think you will still like them.

Lee, great site. Brings back fond memories, but not in 1980. Was at the fog out and didn't enjoy myself much at all. Thanks for the memories, great pics.

Mike Brooks was the one who really was hurt by the fog that night...perfect 500 score, pole position and then an afternoon race. What could have been...

Thanks for the flashback. 1980 was my second trip to Knoxville and the first time that I took my dad. Man, its just unbelivable how fast the time has gone. I 'll visit yiour site again and take more trips back in time. The big tanks are coming back, now if we could just outlaw, make that legislate out, the wings.

I was thinking the same thing. It's my favorite shot. Sometimes one has to break the rules and every now and then they get a rare gem. This shot is a rare gem IMHO.
That's the problem with a lot of today's photographers. They're so busy banging away 1500 left side shots from the infield with a digital and strobe with the hopes of selling that they overlook the heart and soul of the sport. Just my opinion but that last one is very cool.

I like the last shot too.
And wow, I've never seen a picture of Hewitt with all that hair. Groovy man!

Glad everyone enjoyed the shots from 1980. Interesting that a photo I tossed last was one of the most commented photos.

Lee, very cool pics..I was at the I-70 shows back in the late 70's and early 80's, those were the days my friend! Do you have any pics from my home track, state fair speedway in Sedalia? Would really love to see some from back in the day. We used to have the 50 lapper on the mile during the fair and I would almost give my left leg for some of those pics! Thanks, Wheels

WOW!!!!!
Thanks for the blast from the past..
I must agree that the last shot in the 1980 Knoxville folder is one if the neatest shots I have ever seen. Very rare to see a shot from ground level outside the track and the coloring gives it just enough of a vintage look that it is truly a work of art. I want a 20x30 poster of that dude...look for an order soon..
I also spent a lot of time going thru the other folders because as it turns out I was at all of those races at I-70 as a 9 year old. Never missed a sprint car race there after the dirt went on. If I could zoom really tight I could probably see me and dad in the stands in the background of the shot with Jac and Sammy & Shane sitting on the pit wall. We always set about 6 rows from the top just past the flagstand.
I would also love to see some shots from MO State fair speedway in Sedalia. I saw my first sprint car race there on the mile at about age 6 or 7. No wings, Shane Carson won and I never again looked at stockcars the same.
Once again...AWESOME
Loose is when you hit the wall with the rear of the
car, tight is when you hit the wall with the front of
the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and
torque is how far you move the wall.
