Tony Jones/Mark Alexander Benefit Sunday, August 22

Lakewood, CA. – The third annual fund raising benefit for the Tony Jones and Mark Alexander race team is scheduled for Sunday, August 22 at the Zanzabuku Sports Lounge, Lakewood, CA. Race fans can again look forward to this year's version that will feature a Mexican food vendor famous for their Carne Asada tacos and other Mexican fare, a racing memorabilia raffle, a 50/50 raffle, plenty of bench racing and the coldest drinks in southern California. Several surprise raffle prizes can be expected.

This year's event will also mark the debut of the new Tony Jones T-Shirts with all proceeds going directly to the Alexander/Jones team. Former driver Bob Michnowicz of Timeless Enterprises in Torrance will be designing and printing the new shirts. There is a possibility that the shirts will be available at the team trailer on Saturday, July 31, the next scheduled USAC/CRA race at the Perris Auto Speedway.

The Alexander Race Team began in 1990 and participated in their first sprint car race at Ascot Park in 1995. Mark's brother Steve was the team's first driver and they have remained together throughout the years operating as a low funded, very competitive race team. In 2007, with Mark as the car owner and Steve as the crew chief they won the 2007 USAC/CRA Championship with Tony Jones behind the wheel of the famous #4 "Silver Bullet" sprint car.

Last year's event featured 10-11 race cars parked in front of the Lakewood lounge ranging from quarter midgets, midgets, California Lightening sprint cars, sprint cars and vintage race machines. Several drivers and former drivers were also on hand including Ventura Racing Association Champion Kevin Kierce, VRA Rookie Brody Roa, Western States Midget Driver Jake Swanson, Ventura father and son combination Angel (Pro Dwarf) and Austin Figueroa (Junior Midget), USAC/CRA sprint car owner Dave Miller, California Lightening sprint car driver Tobie Sampson as well as former drivers Jimmie Oskie and Steve Howard.

Also on hand last year was Raceway Video's Jeff Kristensen, Wagtimes' Ken Wagner, Surfnsprint's Mike Grosswendt; Perris track announcer Chris Holt and Ventura race photographer Rob Hargraves.

The Sunday event begins at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 22. The Zanzabuku Sports Lounge is located at 4825 Paramount Blvd., Lakewood, CA. For more information call 562.423.9872 or 562.544.8941.

If I didn't have to work Sunday in San Bernardino by 4pm, I would be there. I just don't trust the traffic to get me to work on time to get down there.

Have fun for me!!!!

RIP Chet and Mark. You might be gone but never will
be forgotten.

Hey, you may have some competition.

You may want to combine this trip to Venice Beach.

In any event, I hope that Tony and his supporters have a successful day.

Raffle items continue to arrive for this Sunday's (August 22) annual Tony Jones – Mark Alexander Racing Benefit at the Zanzabuku Sports Lounge in Lakewood, CA.

Ventura Raceway has donated several free tickets to the "Best Little Dirt Track in America" as has the Perris Auto Speedway. Also Jeff Kristensen's Raceway Video will be donating several exciting videos of sprint car action at the PAS.

Belita Michnowicz of the Legends of Ascot has generously donated several posters of its first two events held at the Perris Auto Speedway. Both posters feature many great racers and supporters of sprint car racing at that legendary track.

A 1:18 scale die cast model of the 1955 Indy Roadster driven by Billy Vukovich will also be raffled as well as a beautiful coffee table book covering the Indy roadsters during the 50s and 60s. Another book about the life of Jan Opperman will also be given away.

In addition, Mike Grosswendt of All Coast Construction and "Surfnsprint" has generously donated several autographed photos of Tony Jones and the Mark Alexander pit crew for the raffle. "Big Mike" is a well respected promoter, writer and supporter of sprint car racing in California.

The owners of the Zanzabuku have chosen this year's event to unveil the new Tony Jones' Tee-Shirts with all proceeds from the sales to go directly to the race team. The new shirts are being sold for $20 and will be available this Sunday. Bobby Michnowicz of Timeless Enterprises in Torrance has designed and produced the new shirt with several to be given away during the raffle. It is an amazing shirt.

As was the case last year, the bar plans to show several of Jeff Kristensen's racing videos on its large 40-inch, big screen, television for the race fans. A free Taco Wagon will also be on hand for the benefit of all who attend. Several race teams are expected to attend including VRA's Brody Roa and USAC Midget driver Jake Swanson.

The Lakewood lounge would like to thank the many individuals and race tracks that continue to support this worthy cause.

As always the Zanzabuku features the coldest beverages in town and a laid back family atmosphere can be expected with plenty of bench racing. The Zanzabuku is located at 4825 Paramount Blvd., in the city of Lakewood. Telephone 562.423.9872 for more information.

We are hoping that he does, but at this point it is an unknown. Hope to find out more this Sunday when we have the opportunity to speak with car owner Mark Alexander.
