Sammy needs to take some of that money and invest in a personality!

How much Outlaw money is up for grabs during the "Month of Money" this year?

You realize that's money the car has made, not sammy himself.

65 - no I did not. Thanks for the correction. That renders this entire thread meaningless.

It is the earnings Sammy has made for that car. It adds up fast when you win and finish top 5 often enough.

It's the earnings of that car with Sammy as the driver. $44,650 as the #1, and $14, 950 as the #24. Terry McCarl has earned $12,525 in World of Outlaws action in 2010.

Would that make him a better driver, or make him more exciting to watch? When I go to a race I want to see a good race and do not care if the driver can be a good salesman.

I have to agree that he is one of the best sprint car drivers that ever lived. There is no doubt that he is exciting to watch as well, but imo he could have been a lot more than what he is today had it not been for his attitude and personality. I honestly believe that is what has kept him from being as successful as Kinser. Everyone wants to see a good show but when you get out of the car after winning a race and look like someone just kicked your dog, that just doesn't seem like the type of guy I wanna watch race.
The guy is doing something for a living that people would kill to do and to see him at the track all sulled up is just an insult to the fans. JMO

I like Sammy's attitude and his reserved demeanor ... he's all business and his business is racing - WYSIWYG.

Keep in mind Sammy rarely ran for points anywhere. If he had, SK probably wouldn't have won as many WoO championships or as many races. He ran everything from NAPCAR to the Indy500. He may not be the most exciting or fan friendly driver but you can't deny his skills. I for one am glad to see him back out there showing them how to get it done.

So you think he would win more races if he would smile.
Somebody should have told AJ that he could have been great also
Steve is a real grinner thats for sure
I think they should have open face helmets so we could see if they are happy coming down the straight away if they are not black flag them
His attitude and personalty is what made him
Maybe if he was happier he could do better at the Chile Bowl

Some of you will think this sounds corny, but...
I crewed for Sammy for a short time in '99. By the way, he was great to work for and treated me fine-totally different person when not at the track. Anyway, me and him went to Gaerte's to pick up six new engines in late winter, using his Chevy Tahoe and the 16 or 18 foot trailer they used for Kevin's cart racing. Sammy doesn't come across as physically strong or big, but it was amazing just to see the strength in his forearms and his reflexes when he was driving and pulling an unbalanced trailer with that 1/2 ton Tahoe. It was pretty windy too, if I remember. Kind of reminded me of Popeye's arms.

I've noticed his forearms and they're pretty ripped. They got that way from hard work.

The day Sammy becomes my best friend or I go to lunch or dinner with him will be the day I worry about his personalty, until then I will enjoy watching him drive a race car.

Right on, Grady.
I think the issue here is that we as sprint car racing fans have been spoiled with direct contact to the drivers. We simply do not get that exposure in other forms of racing or other sports in general.
I've bought Nascar and IRL pit passes a few times... and can honestly say a few truck drivers were ok, 1 Indy Car driver was ok (Billy Boat... when I asked if IRL or the Chili Bowl was more fun), no good experiences with any Busch/Nationwide drivers and zero with any Cup drivers.
I've been to some pr-based driver appearances, some track/sanctioning body arranged driver autograph sessions... same story.
Every other experience with a "big time" racing driver left a lot to be desired. I was polite, didn't bug them, waited my turn, etc.
I wonder how deep & intellectual, how profoundly friendly you'd find NBA, NFL, etc. players?
If you keep a little distance from the people themselves... I think you'll find out that you're happier in general. Your view is extremely "rose colored glasses" when you don't meet them and find out the truth.
Give the drivers their space, let them do their job... and enjoy racing for what goes happens on the track. Anything else and you're asking too much in my opinion.

Well VanH, Steve has managed to keep a ride all these years. You don't see him bouncing from team to team. And you're absolutely right as far as his personality making him what he is today; "someone to call if you need a fill-in" if your driver is injured or has other obligations"!
As far as the fans are concerned Grady, they could care less if their so called "favorite driver" treats them like they're an inconvenience to him because they want a t-shirt or autograph. That should make them your ultimate fan next time you're in town, huh?
Personally I'm glad that he's back on the Outlaw Tour, that way we don't have to see his PRUNE-FACE at the ASCS races!
