I have only lived in Knoxville for going on 9 years so its always neat to see pics from earlier years of Knoxville. Do you have an photos of the main entrance and Highway 14 and how things looked?

That was a kinder, gentler Knoxville Nats ... grandstand adjacent camping is now concessions and VIP parking. Commercialism has taken away the quaintness of campers watching the parade stroll by. I sure miss the days of the Busride.... the Marion County gestapo ain't a lot of fun to party with.

With tighter security at all major events (even the Nationals) it will never be like it used to.

Things change, but it was a lot of fun back then when campers filled the area behind the grandstands and most of the racers camped at the track with their cars in the barns. The Arizona racers in the Arizona barn and the California cars that were loaded with chrome were some fond memories. Some guys that wrecked or had motor trouble would be working on their cars at 1:00 am and it was always fun just to walk around and see what was going on. Those things we miss, but other things are a lot better too. A lot of nice improvements over the years, grandstands, Hall of Fame, track lighting, pavement in the pits, nicer restrooms, the best fire and safety crew, and large purses, etc. Knoxville has done a nice job over the years and sometimes they deserve more credit than they get.

I remember a rainy crappy Friday afternoon at the Nationals back in the mid 70s, very few people were visible in the fairgrounds.
Then they rolled a car out of the Arizona barn and pushed it off down the midway and fired it up. 3 minutes after the engine fired there were a good hundred people gathered around in the rain.

People did not sue you for everything then
We shut it down ourself , too many lawyers with not enough to do
Just try and get Ins. and do not tell me you do not need it because it would scare you if you knew how much they had paid out for dumb things.

Had this picture been taken later in the night, might have caught a glimpse of a "bus ride"

Is that Stubb in the red & white shirt in the lower right corner of the pic!!? Maybe a long-lost vertically challenged brother??? lol
PS, love the pic Pete - thanks for sharing. If you have other photos similar to this one, please share!!

I was wondering if that was Stubb or some of his kin as well.

Stubb is MUCH taller than that guy, remember he gets his nickname for that short finger, lol. Take It Easy...
PS Pete, about where that tan colored van is located is where I sold photos at the Nationals for more than a dozen years...

Oh how I yearn for those days, been going since 1977 and have seen a lot of changes(and not all good). Times were a lot more simple back then, I remember sitting on the fence after the races and drinking beer until I passed out and fell off, and guess what , nobody gave a shit, I woke up about 8 the next day went to my tent. That got to be a routine that I kinda liked, nobody bothering anyone. I still go every year and probably will until I can't but I sure do miss the old days. I hope everyone has a great time.

If any of you invent a time machine I will buy the first ticket and you can take me back to the good ol days of Knoxville. Back when a fan could just be a fan and the sport wasn't all about money.
