OCRS Set For East-West Shootout at Ada
By John Lemon
Tulsa, Oklahoma (July 6, 2010) - After getting an unexpected week off due to last Saturday's rainout, the sprint cars of the Oil Capital Racing Series will re-fire once again this Saturday night in what is expected to be an East vs. West Shootout at the Oklahoma Sports Park in Ada Oklahoma.
Mike Goodman of Tulsa took the honors on June 12th at OSP during the second annual "Harold Leep Jr. Memorial" event. Since that trip to OSP, the chase for the 2010 OCRS title couldn't be any closer as Rafe Essary of Stillwell leads Jamie Passmore of Rose Oklahoma by an ultra thin 754-753 margin. These two are expected to continue their tenacious run for the title against each other and the OSP race will only add excitement to the already enthralling drama unfolding between these two combatants.
In addition to the top spot, more battles are brewing for positions within the top ten. Goodman holds a limited margin of 59 points over Bristow's Tim Kent for third. Then it gets real interesting. Kent is only three markers ahead of Drumright's Fred Mattox, who in turn, is only 14 points in front of Broken Arrow's Travis Jenkins for the fifth spot. Whit Gastineau of OKC, an OCRS feature winner last time out in Lawton is next, but only six tokens behind Jenkins. Shayla Waddell, also an OKC racer, is all but seven points behind Gastineau. The top ten rounds out with Danny Smith of Sand Springs 61 points back of Waddell and Terry Easum completes the top ten only 22 behind Smith. All this means that by the time this Saturday's feature event is completed, anywhere from zero to 6 or 7 positions could change hands among the top ten. Its just an incredible points battle this season.
Thirty-one sprint cars signed in the last time OCRS rode into town and provided racing fans a showpiece of racing action. An east vs. west shootout of sorts could very well come into play as it did during the stop at Lawton 2 weeks ago. In that race, Oklahoma City and Lawton area teams (west-siders) took the odd numbered positions (1-9) in the feature race while the Tulsa area based teams (east-siders) took the even numbered spots (2-10) of the first ten cars cross the finish line.
In the battle for the 2010 OCRS Brodix Cylinders / Broken Arrow Lawn and Garden "Rookie of the Year" honors, Arkansas' Terry Easum, (who now calls Inola Oklahoma home) leads the way for a set of new Brodix racing heads for the top rookie achievement. Not one to go down without a fight, another young gun, Brady Demeree, is only 59 points behind Easum and Kacee Frazier, one of OCRS' popular drivers, is third in R.O.Y. points with Beau Gastineau next in line in behind them.
New hours are in place for this week at OSP. Gates will open at 4pm with racing set to begin at 6:30. OCRS drivers meeting will take place at 5:30 with hot laps starting immediately after.
Oklahoma Sports Park is located 10 miles west of Ada on state highway 3.
