OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma City council is set to declare State Fair Speedway obsolete and ask for bids for the facility's demolition. An item on Tuesday morning's council agenda is a resolution that says the 56-year-old speedway is in "disrepair" and is "a potential hazard to the health and safety" of local citizens.
The resolution would declare "the need to dispose of" the speedway's grandstand. A companion item would start the bidding process for demolition work, which is set to start in August.
Mayor Mick Cornett has said the track would have required about $400,000 in immediate electrical repairs before racing could have been safely conducted this year.
Track promoter Lanny Edwards has said city officials and the State Fair board have been trying to get rid of the track so they can replace it with a more profitable facility.

It'll be interesting to see just how much it will cost to demolish our beloved racing facility.

This is a low blow to the racing community. My guess would be 4 million from start to finish. A far amount from $400,000.00.

Randy,
We should see how much the contractors think. The announcement for bids was voted on today as well. Remember there is the replay of city council meetings tonight on the city channel.

If that race facility was/is in "desrepair" and "a potential hazard to the health and safety," as the article states, most of the tracks in this country should be condemned immediately.
I still find it interesting that of all of the sports facilities closed in Oklahoma City in recent years, this appears to be one of the few, if not the only, that was not replaced by the city.
The city looked at the dirt track racing community, laughed and turned its back because that community does not swing a big enough bat or control many votes. They'll tell you that the little man matters, but the city's actions speak much louder.
We eat too many cheeseburgers and not nearly enough caviar. Even in Oklahoma, the best of middle America, that doesn't fly any more.

Don't reckon they could tear down the unsafe grandstand and put up some bleachers?

Well in the orginally declearation what was discussed at the council meeting was the removal of the dirt that make up the tracks.

The bottom line is that it is a sad situation, that our city leaders can do what the hell they want with our tax dollars. And then play the safety game, someone needs to look at the run down buildings at the fair grounds at how safe they are NOT!!! It is just not the grandstands there are more buildings in worse shape and they still are open for business.
